Racing game principles Codemasters recently made the exciting announcement that the studio is currently working on something called F1 Online, a free-to-play browser-based title set to launch into operation in the first quarter of 2012.
If you want to get in on the Formula One racing and management action ahead of the release of the game, you can sign up for the F1 Online beta right now at the official website.
But what is F1 Online, really?
Fasten your seatbelts ladies and gents because Codemasters are treating us to another entry in the excellent DiRT franchise.
DiRT Showdown is scheduled to be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in May 2012 and is a spin-off title rather than a sequel to DiRT 3.
Visitors to the Tokyo Game Show were treated to the first public showing of F1 2011 for the PS Vita. In celebration of the first hands-on, Codemasters released the first video for the game along with four new screenshots.
One of the big additions to this year’s edition of Codemasters’ Formula One racer is the ability to take part in a racing season co-operatively with a friend online, which means that not only will you be sharing in the glory of victory together, but also competing with one another for points and car upgrades in the same team.
E3 2011 was a new beginning for Codemasters’ next first-person shooter, Bodycount. Previous showings of the game were intriguing but showed nothing that we hadn’t already done in the game’s progenitor, Black, and didn’t represent anything more unique than pure arcade action seen a game like Bulletstorm.
Thanks to new reveals at this year’s E3, however, Bodycount very suddenly became an exciting proposition with its focus on gunplay, destructible environments and massive explosions!
With the release of a huge batch of new screenshots for Bodycount, new story and gameplay details have also emerged to fill us in on a whole batch of details:
Oh Murray Walker, will your influence over English Formula One commentating ever expire?
The answer to that question is no, but you’re more than welcome to mull over your own answers and suppositions as you watch an impressive (and debut) gameplay trailer for Codemasters’ next F1 title, F1 2011.
You can mix the experience with a few of the latest screenshots for the realistic high-speed racer as well… Go! Go! Go!
There’s a section of the gaming public who think that yearly iterations of sports franchises are all about updating the roster of teams and sportsmen and shipping a new entry to a series, but as F1 2011 chief game designer Stephen Hood explains, “it’s nothing like at all.”
The upcoming F1 2011, for example, will include a “stack of new things,” not least of which is a much more worthwhile multiplayer offering over F1 2010, as well as cooperative season play with friends, a split-screen feature, significant changes to car handling, better AI, and other ‘massive improvements.’
Watch the very first developer diary for F1 2011 to get looks at the game in action, as developers (and advisor Anthony Davidson) speak on the changes:
As El33tonline’s review of DiRT 3 will tell you, the game is mighty and swiftly usurped its predecessor for the crown of rally racer king.
The big new addition to the DiRT series is gymkhana, which is a real-world contest that could be described as a sort of ‘car ballet,’ where competitors perform stunts with their cars in a specially designed obstacle course in an effort to ‘wow’ judges and delight the crowds.
El33tonline and Megarom teamed up again to give away two amazing DiRT 3 prizes, and all you had to do to win one was ‘wow’ the El33tonline judges by describing the perfect series of tricks and obstacle course runs that you would try to perform in gymkhana, in DiRT 3.
Who impressed us the most?
It was a bit of a quiet E3 for Codemasters and Namco Bandai this year, but the pair’s marquee titles were present at full blast with impressive showings from fantasy-themed offerings such as Dark Souls and Soul Calibur V, and the decidedly more extreme first-person shooter, Bodycount.
There was a period of time where I was very worried about the development of Codemasters’ Bodycount, a hectic first-person shooter billed as a raucous rollercoaster that swings from one over-the-top action set-piece to the next, while allowing players to shoot the world to pieces thanks to generously destructible environments.
It’s only very recently that my worries have been abated, first with the release of some impressive screenshots, and now with an insanely cool looking gameplay trailer.
Watch below as enemies and the player tear through buildings with a cacophony of bullets, explosions and brute strength – amazing!
DiRT 3 is one of the best racers around. It offers a deep yet accessible racing experience with plenty of variety in disciplines and cars. It’s a beautiful-looking game with remarkable attention to detail, and is also technically superior to many of its rivals. Multiplayer is brilliantly executed, with enough compelling modes to keep you coming back day after day.
DiRT 3 also has a chunky singleplayer mode, which should keep you busy for at least 20 hours before you’ve seen all the content in the game – though that’s not to say you’ll have completed the impressive scope of DiRT 3’s challenges by then.

Codemasters has revealed that the first downloadable content for Operation Flashpoint: Red River will be available at the end of June. The DLC will cost 560 MS Points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and $6.99 on the PlayStation Network.
It’s been a busy day for Codemasters, first they revealed new screenshots for their upcoming first-person shooter Bodycount, and now they’ve announced that the Colin McRae Vision Charity Pack is out now for DiRT 3.
Codemasters have been pretty quiet about Bodycount, their upcoming insane-sounding first-person shooter since it was first revealed in March last year. But that looks set to change as the publisher today released a batch of new screenshots along with the box art for the game.
El33tonline and Megarom have teamed up to bring you the chance to win two awesome DiRT 3 hampers.
If you’d like a copy of this new off-road rally racing game, along with buttons, lanyard, a mug and DC T-Shirt tucked inside this cool hamper, then head over to our DiRT 3 competition page right now and get your entry in.
Good luck everybody!
