Righty-ho, here goes: Clover: A Curious Tale is a new and improved version of the political platform puzzler Clover that was released on Xbox Live Indie games last year. When I was asked to review the game “Clover,” I had to ask what it was about. It was described to me, simply, as a “Watercolour Political Platform Puzzler” Indie game. This had me both intrigued and concerned at the same time. Hearing that it was an Indie game, I decided to give it the benefit of not reading all the online hype about the game.

A nice and quick 149MB download and I was ready to begin playing. Launching the game gave me a simple canvassed interface that gets to the point. Your character starts off by receiving his allowance from the king. You discover you are recently orphaned from an attack by the neighbouring Andalans. In a lonely house, you begin your adventure with a newspaper and a gift from the grave. Once I had caught up with the local news, I moved outside.

Daniel 'Deejay' JonesLast week developer Binary Tweed announced that a new and improved version of platform-puzzle adventure Clover would be heading to the PC. This comes after Blitz Game Studios signed the new game, entitled Clover: A Curious Tale, to the Blitz Arcade’s 1UP label, making Clover one of the first Xbox Live Indie Games to be signed up and ported to other platforms.

El33tonline caught up with Daniel ‘Deejay’ Jones, Managing Director of Binary Tweed, to learn a little more about the new enhanced version. We get more details about the new puzzles, sub-quest and the low down on how many multiple endings we can expect in A Curious Tale. Jones also discusses whether we can expect a sequel to Clover and reveals if his opinions of Xbox Live Indie Games have changed.

El33tonline: According to the press release, Clover: A Curious Tale will be coming to the PC and ‘other systems.’ Any chance of expanding what these systems may be? Will Clover return to Xbox Live or perhaps debut on the PlayStation Network?

Whilst there’s nothing to announce at present, those are certainly two platforms I’d love to see the game on. If the game works on a given platform, and makes financial sense, we’ll be looking at taking it there.

UK developer Binary Tweed has announced that watercolour political platform puzzler Clover is now available for purchase via Xbox Live Community Games.

The game suffered a few review process delays but the extra development time means that Clover’s unlockable artwork gallery and designer’s notes are back in the game. Clover features “nearly 150MB of artwork, over 30 minutes of original piano music and hours of head-scratching puzzle-solving.”

Binary Tweed’s political platform puzzler Clover will be released via Xbox Live Community Games during April. The game will cost 400 Microsoft Points.

You can get your first glimpse of the newly designed lead character Sam (who was given an overhaul based on community feedback) in the new screenshots below. The screenshots feature new artwork and locations as well as a new dynamic sky-blending system that means the players view of the game world is constantly changing.

According to Binary Tweed, “Clover features so much artwork that some is destined to be left on the cutting room floor, after the game hit Microsoft’s mandatory 150mb maximum size limit imposed on Community Games.” Could this statement hint at future DLC for the game?

Earlier in the week UK developer Binary Tweed announced that it is working on a new political platform puzzler for Xbox Live Arcade titled Clover.

Daniel 'Deejay' JonesIntrigued by Clover’s promise of watercolour artwork, melancholy piano pieces and political themes, El33tonline caught up with Daniel ‘Deejay’ Jones, Managing Director of Binary Tweed, to learn a little more about the game and the developer.

We get a bit more detail about the game’s release date and pricing as well as the inspiration behind the game and the autosave feature.

First let’s take a closer look at what we know about Clover so far. Set in a welfare state medieval world ruled by a monarchy, Clover tells the tale of Sam, a recently orphaned teenager, who explores the land, solving puzzles, collecting items and interacting with various characters.

This “plot-driven platformer” seeks to draw inspiration from classic games such as Fantastic Dizzy, “brought up to date without all the frustrations of the older games.” Binary Tweed promise “many hours of gameplay and plot development” as well as “value-for-money beyond other Xbox Live Community Games.”

Clover will also feature modern gameplay mechanics including “unique and unforgiving alternatives to player health and death.” It features autosave and the developer has “binned lives and energy.”

Now you are up to speed, let’s get into the Q and A.

- El33tonline: Binary Tweed’s motto is “New games that are a bit like old games, but better.” How long have you been gaming for that you decided to choose this as the company motto and what made you decide to enter the world of game development?

Daniel Jones: I’ve been playing games since I was about four years old - one of my earliest memories is playing a console, the name of which escapes me, that featured a monochrome stick-man bouncing a ball. Pretty much since then I wanted to be a games developer, but I got caught up in the dot.com boom and wound up in the financial sector.
