I guess it’s with little surprise that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the most played game on Xbox LIVE for the past week, and we can expect this trend to continue for a while, with very little in the way of resistance, other than Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Halo: Reach, the next Call of Duty, and maybe even the Medal of Honor reboot releasing in the near to far-flung future to give Modern Warfare 2 a run for its money… but for now, that game remains the king of LIVE.

Xbox LIVE Logo SmallerAs far as the best selling Xbox LIVE Arcade titles go, Magic: The Gathering takes the top spot for the past week, followed in hot pursuit by the newly released Serious Sam HD: TFE, with Trials HD in third.

As usual (and good for them) I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 is still the best selling Xbox LIVE Indie Game, followed by Head Shot 2 and The Impossible Game.

Ubisoft’s Just Dance holds on to the number 1 spot on the UK’s All Formats Chart for a second week in a row, despite a 33% drop in sales and fighting off competition from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which moves into second place (-10%) ahead of Wii Fit Plus at number 3 (-17%).

In so doing Just Dance becomes the first Ubisoft title since the original Assassin’s Creed to retain the top spot for more than a week. Last week the title broke records, claiming the highest ever sales for a game in the second week of the year. This week the only game to sell better in week 3 is World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade from 2007.

During E3 last year, Microsoft revealed how the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would be receiving timed exclusive content packs sometime in the unknown future, ensuring PS3 players would have to wait for any additional content for the game until Xbox 360 owners had their fill.

The unknown release date was subsequently narrowed down to ‘Spring’ this year in an announcement made during CES, but the exact period of exclusivity was still unknown until today. In comments made to Eurogamer, a Microsoft spokesperson said:

Wii Play BoxshotNintendo’s popular Wii Play has become the best-selling game of all time in the United States. That’s according to the latest data released by tracking firm The NPD Group who came to this conclusion after compiling fifteen years worth of videogames sales in the US.

Wii Play, released back in 2006, overcome competition from both the Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto series to triumph, despite being a Wii exclusive title. As many of you will know Wii Play is a compilation of mini-games that comes bundled with a Wii Remote. Guitar Hero III came in second on the list, being available on no less than four platforms, with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (available on two platforms) finishing third.

NPD GroupDespite an excellent set of results for December 2009, which saw a 4% year-over-year increase in revenue and the best ever results in a single month, overall US retail console game industry revenues for 2009 were down by 8%, falling to $19.66 billion from the record-setting $21.4 billion in 2008.

A huge batch of stunning screenshots from EA’s upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has been released, showing a number of action shots and good looks at some amazing atmospheric and subtle lighting effects, sharp textures and good depth-of-field implementation, all adding up to extremely realistic looking scenes.

Bad Company 2 is also being touted as something of a Modern Warfare 2 killer, or rather, a pretender to the throne, and if it can keep these visuals up throughout the game, while offering a satisfying singleplayer component and a similarly deep level of customisation, content and skills upgrades in multiplayer, I wouldn’t argue with the claim.
