El33tonline Question of the Day

Downloadable content over Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network with things like add-on packs, map packs and character and item additions (and anything else you can think of) is now commonplace in the world of videogames and has come a long way since the laughable ‘horse armour incident’ with Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Nowadays, we mostly just hop online and get the latest patch or buy the latest content, but this past week we’ve seen two ‘new’ ways for us to experience that content with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, so our Question of the Day is:

What DLC delivery innovations do you want to see?

Do you remember when Xbox frontman Major Nelson posted up the latest Xbox LIVE Activity Ranking, revealing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to be the most played game on the service yet again, followed by Halo 3 in second and Halo: Reach in third?

Yeah. That was funny.

[Note: Major Nelson has since updated the listing, revealing Halo: Reach to be the No. 2 game on the service for the time period specified, but for the past seven days, the game has indeed been No. 1 on Xbox LIVE.]

Due to what developer Bungie is calling a “manual reporting error,” the latest activity ranking posted on Major Nelson’s blog is apparently false and “well off the mark.”

Bungie itself records all kinds of crazy data and events going on in its own games, Halo: Reach and Halo 3 included, and taking into consideration the fact that Halo 3 appeared ahead of Halo: Reach in Major Nelson’s latest chart, and Modern Warfare 2 appeared ahead of both of them, we can go into Bungie’s findings and latest statistics with a clearer picture:

‘20 million Call of Duty map packs sold.’

Those words must sound like pure poetry to Activision Blizzard, which recently announced that this landmark achievement had been passed as of June 30th this year, and the end of the company’s last fiscal quarter.

Whoa, what’s this? Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has today been added to Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand digital download service, flanked by two other military combat games in the form of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Battlestations: Midway?

Modern Warfare 2 Logo

A post on everybody’s favourite gaming forum, NeoGAF, has gone and detailed a list of comparison’s between the PC versions of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and when all of the features are laid out like that, it doesn’t

While some of the comparisons (such as the downloadable content pricing) are a little speculative, most of them are grounded in fact, such as the number of online players being capped at 18, which was confirmed in a recent online chat with developers from Infinity Ward.

You can look through the list of comparisons between the PC versions of the original Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 below:

Enjoy it while it lasts, Halo 3, because while you may be at the top of the Xbox LIVE Activity Chart this week… and maybe next week and possibly the week after, it can’t possibly last after the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 over the week of November 17th. Soak it up.

Xbox LIVE Logo SmallerIn fact, the assault on Halo 3’s dominance may start a little early, after Xbox LIVE’s Deal of the Week this week reduced the price of Call of Duty 4’s Variety Map Pack by half, which gives just that little bit more of an incentive for CoD 4 (currently at No. 2 on the activity chart) players to get online and shoot some fools in the face in a variety of different ways. cough

Top selling Xbox LIVE Arcade titles for this week include Trials HD (once again) at No. 1, SOUTH PARK LET’S GO TOWER DEFENSE PLAY! at No. 2 and Zombie Apocalypse at No. 3.

The Xbox LIVE Indie Games sales list is mixed up a tiny bit as Avatar Drop reaches No. 1 and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 shifts down to No. 2, with the ever-present Headshot sitting stubbornly at No. 3.

The full global list of top played Xbox Live games, original Xbox games and top selling XBLA and Xbox LIVE Indie Games follows below, all based on unique users and full versions purchased.

Yep, that’s right - for one week, Gold Members only have to pay 400 MS Points (as opposed to the normal 800) for the CoD4 Variety Map Pack, which contains “four new multiplayer maps featuring a variety of locations,” such as the following:

Call of Duty Modern WarfareThe latest patch for PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare includes an attempt at preventing would-be hackers and modders from gaining an unfair advantage in the game online.

According to a tweet from Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling, the patch “Fixes hacking in public matches,” at the same time sneaking in a “fix for rapid fire mods.”

The “fix for rapid fire mods” is of primary concern to online players of Call of Duty 4, as Infinity Ward have set a time limit in-between each shot of a semiautomatic weapon, limiting players to a shot every few half second or so for weaponry such as pistols and shotguns - this in an effort to circumvent a hacker being able to simply hold down the trigger and fire their weapons faster than the game intends to allow.

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will be coming to the Wii on the 10th of November.

This announcement confirms earlier reports that indicated that the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (which was released in late 2007 on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC) would be making its way to the Nintendo Wii.

The game is being ported to the Wii by Treyarch and will be released in conjunction with the launch of Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2.

Kotaku recently posted up yet-to-be-confirmed news that the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (which released in late 2007 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC) will be making its way to Nintendo’s Wii later this year to coincide with the release of Modern Warfare 2 on other platforms.

Call of Duty: World at War developer, Treyarch, have been put in charge of development and porting duties on the title, which will release on November 10th to form part of an all-format (or ‘most-format’) Call of Duty videogame franchise offensive, as Call of Duty branded games Modern Warfare 2 (on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC) and Modern Warfare: Mobilised (on Nintendo DS) make their way to the market.

In the past, Call of Duty games on the Wii have come in the form of World at War and the previous Call of Duty 3, so it’s at least a little strange that number four in the series skipped the Wii. Perhaps Activision were waiting until they could take full advantage of gaps in the development schedules of their teams? Who knows.

An official announcement for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on the Wii is expected later today.
