So many tiny pieces of videogame news have emerged over the last day or so, but despite their relative size to, say, the reveal of a circle pad peripheral for 3DS, they’re still very important and/or interesting.
Just take our word for it.
Let’s try to round up some of the more important bits of tiny game news in this edition of News B33ts:
A $1 million tournament? 6 000 Call of Duty fans? A performance by Kanye West? And the debut of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer?
It must be the inaugural Call of Duty XP event, kicking off today in Los Angeles.
If you’re a Call of Duty fan, you’ve no doubt heard that there’s going to be a massive gathering of like-minded gaming enthusiasts this year in Los Angeles, giving everybody the chance to get hands-on with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer and partake in other themed activities.
Taking place from September 2nd through September 3rd, the Call of Duty XP event will be held on a 12-acre compound in LA, while playing host to a $1 million Call of Duty tournament and other exciting goings-on. For Call of Duty fans, this is the event of the year.
But you’re in South Africa. What chance do you have of attending Call of Duty XP? Thanks to South African videogame distributor Megarom, your chances just went up!
If you haven’t yet got into the Xbox 360 beta for Activision and Beachhead’s Call of Duty Elite, then you can while away a bit of time by watching a massive walkthrough video for the statistics and social service.
How much time should you carve away to watch this extremely in-depth feature? About half an hour.
Activision Publishing has announced a brand new convention scheduled for the beginning of September this year in Los Angeles where rabid Call of Duty fans will be able to participate in tournaments, visit developer discussion panels, enjoy “AAA” live entertainment and go hands-on with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer, all while supporting war veterans through Activision’s Call of Duty Endowment fund.
Fancy joining us for a bit of speculation and rumour milling? Great stuff, because we’re about to have a look at some unconfirmed information regarding the (unannounced) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Or should we say, Call of Duty: Elite? Let’s collect and dissect this data in the latest edition of H33rsay!
In the last 24 hours, two fairly significant pieces of rumoured information have emerged in the world of videogames, both of which are near and dear to many a gamer’s heart: The next Call of Duty, and the upcoming Dashboard update for Xbox 360.
Let’s rummage around in some half-truths and indulge in some whole lies for a while, shall we?
Activision Blizzard was keen to point out to investors during its recent earnings call that not only is Call of Duty: Black Ops still going strong sales-wise, but the next entry into the game industry-stomping franchise will be revealed very soon.
Since the release of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Medal of Honor last year, EA CEO John Riccitiello has become wholly determined for his company to dominate the shooter game market, but the only way to achieve this goal is by toppling the current genre king: Call of Duty.
While Bad Company 2 and even Medal of Honor have allowed EA to make significant strides towards competing with the industry-stomping Call of Duty franchise, EA’s shooters have so far been unable to reach quite the sales success of Activision’s titles.
This year, with Battlefield 3 from EA and DICE, Riccitiello is confident that his company has the better product. Speaking to investors recently Riccitiello claimed:
Late last week, a website popped into existence powered by the domain name ‘FindMakarov.com,’ and given the timing of the site’s appearance (near Game Developers Conference), the style and presentation of the site (very reminiscent of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) and the name itself (Vladimir Makarov is an antagonist from Modern Warfare 2), it was instantly presumed that a reveal for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was on the cards.
Welp. Turned out we presumed wrong.
[Update] I’ve managed to grab a ghostly image from the countdown site of a soldier of some description, although I can’t quite make out who it could be. Makarov himself? Check it out below. [End of Update]
A new countdown clock website has just been discovered that’s currently ticking down to… something happening in just under five days.
It just so happens that the Game Developers Conference kicks off in just under five days, too.
At an investor call earlier today (or yesterday, depending), Activision Blizzard CEO of Publishing Eric Hirshberg announced that a free-to-play edition of its industry-stomping Call of Duty franchise would go live in China sometime next year.
Hirshberg also confirmed new entries to previously popular ‘niche’ franchises as well as a mysterious new cross-media entertainment franchise.
Activision Blizzard has released its financial results for the company’s second fiscal quarter ending June 30th, posting net revenues of $967 million, down from $1.04 billion during the same period last year.
According to social media message postings by Bethesda Softworks’ community manager Nick Breckon, some big names are going to be attending QuakeCon in Dallas, Texas in two weeks time – names that may just be ready to make a big announcement.
For the first fiscal quarter ending March 31st 2010, Activision Blizzard has reported revenue of $1.3 billion (based on GAAP; $714 million on non-GAAP), on profits of $381 million – doubling earnings during the same period last year, and handily beating analyst expectations by some margin.
