A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

Kinect has grown from strength to strength this year, and as a result of increased developer support you can choose from more software titles now than ever before. The list of Kinect titles available this year include top class dancing, sports and exercise games, as well as a good selection of games suitable for the younger generation.

It should come as no surprise then that El33tonline’s Top 5 Kinect recommendations include three dance, one sports and one fitness title. Here’s what games you should be looking out for if you own a Kinect or if you’d like Santa to leave a Kinect under your tree this year.

With the Nintendo DS library winding up there’s only a few recent games to recommend, so I’ve combined the DS and 3DS buyer’s guide. If you only own a 3DS don’t forget that you have access to the massive DS library!

Other than the games mentioned here I don’t think the 3DS has built up enough must-have titles to warrant a list for it so I’ve only listed some must-have DS titles.

A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

Comrades, it’s been a little over a year since the PlayStation Move landed on our beloved shores. The honeymoon period is over and Sony has only just begun to show us how we will fight on the beaches, the landing grounds, the fields and the streets. But I am adamant that Sony will never give up and never surrender - and maybe now that the PlayStation Vita is soon to ship out - we will hopefully see more attention given to the plight of motion gaming.

For this buyers guide we will be looking at games that invoke the right to Move. We will be awarding and praising those game developers who sought to revolutionize the motion controlled gaming landscape, taking full advantage of the pin-point accuracy and responsiveness of Sony’s motion controller. Let’s take a look at the best in categories for PlayStation Move games.

A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

I’m going to limit this list to just six games because the Wii just doesn’t get that many top-notch titles these days. For the budget conscious I recommend the Wii’s Select Range – a set of great games for R250 each.

For those looking for something new, here are my recommendations.

A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

There’s such a thing in the gaming world as a ‘bargain bin’ and for those out there not too proud to be willing to humble oneself and dig elbow-deep into the bin and rummage about, there are some truly wonderful gems to behold. And as with all bargains, remember this - the more you spend, the more you save!

Here at El33tonline we’ve done a good share of the hunting for you but please don’t let that stop you from doing a bit of the seasonal bargain hunting yourself! As with all the bargains listed below, it can sometimes pay (ahem) to shop around - but even at these prices, they’re still a steal! I’ve used Takealot as the starting point and I’ve managed to get a general idea of what bargains are out there.

A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

It’s been a bumper year for PS3 owners, with the release of a number of great exclusives that made PS3 the console of choice in 2011. No matter what genre(s) you are a fan of, there have been plenty of awesome titles to play regardless of personal preference.

A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

Let’s face it, December is that time of the year where all anyone ever talks about is Christmas Day. As the years have gone by and as the shops have slowly dominated the festive season, so even the holiday period has shifted name and is now more largely known by its colloquial phrase ‘Xmas.’

My personal feelings on the matter aside, it seems a little interesting that December is, then, the month of Xmas, and I trust most of you can’t think of a better way to celebrate the month of Xmas than with a little loving time with your Xbox! After all, we can all agree it’s not called ‘PSMas’ or ‘WiiMas,’ so the only article that really matters this happy season is the one about the ‘Top Ten Games for Xbox 360 of 2011.’

A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

It’s been a lean year for PSP owners, with only really Square Enix offering decent software support for the handheld in 2011. Luckily there have been some great PSone Classics and a couple of good Minis released on the PlayStation Store during the year, so PSP fans won’t feel that they’ve been completely ignored.

If nothing on the list below appeals to your gaming tastes, then I strongly recommend you rather spend your money on some of the fantastic PSP titles that were released prior to 2011. My ‘Top Five’ list should help in this regard, but there are plenty more quality titles out there that are portable gaming gems.

A Very Special Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011

It has been said before, and I am sure it will be said again: the PC as a gaming platform is dead. Oh, how the critics and naysayers must be cringing at the PC’s current performance! With the current generation of consoles more than five years old they are starting to get a little long in the tooth. Developers are performing magic to get the current games to look as good as they do and their limitations have lead the development of many games.

2011, however, has seen a shift in this design policy. Games are now first and foremost developed for PC and then ported to consoles. This trend will continue until the next generation of consoles is released, and claims of the PC being dead will ring through the internet like echoes of Christmas past.

Sony Computer Entertainment’s motion controller, the PlayStation Move, launched in September this year to an overall positive response – the Motion Controller and Navigator are both incredibly solid pieces of equipment, while games that make proper use of the motion sensing technology (and also take advantage of the PlayStation Eye’s real-time photographic capabilities) are responsive and entertaining in equal measure.

El33tonline Christmas Buyers Guide 2009

So far, however, not many games have made their way to the market that make exclusive use of the PlayStation Move, and a lot of the games that do are passing interests, at best, with no real depth and extensive entertainment value.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any good games available – there definitely are! To help you pick through which PlayStation Move games are worth your time (versus not), you can look over El33tonline’s recommendations below:

The Nintendo DS continues to sell well the world over, bolstered by the release of some fantastic games like Dragon Quest IX, Picross 3D, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story and many more!

This year we also saw the DSi XL being added to the popular family of handhelds, a console that features a 93 percent bigger touch screen and a bigger play screen, a wider viewing angle, and a larger pen-like stylus, culminating in what is quite possibly the ultimate version of Nintendo’s DS. It’s definitely true that once you try the DSi XL, regular DS consoles simply won’t do - just ask El33tonline’s Editor In Chief!

However, if you haven’t joined the handheld gaming world yet, then you might want to take a look at a few new ways to enjoy this super-sized method of portable gaming, including the New Super Mario DSi XL Special Edition Pack and new colour options for the DSi XL.

Even though the Xbox 360 has been a little quiet this year in terms of exclusive titles (or more accurately, less noisy), not only has Microsoft’s box continued to stay ahead of that other home console in terms of worldwide sales, but the exclusives that have appeared on the platform have been mighty indeed!

You need only look over El33tonline’s round-up of the year’s best Xbox 360 games to see that there are still many reasons to get excited about your console of choice:
