Sony has launched the PlayStation Store in Brazil, making it the second country in Latin America to have access to digital content from the PlayStation Network.
Following the launch of Xbox LIVE in South Africa (and eight other countries), Xbox 360 gamers in the country have no doubt been enjoying the opportunity to officially join up with a 23 million+ member strong community of online gamers, as well as the delight of browsing Xbox LIVE Marketplace to choose from hundreds of different Xbox LIVE Arcade games…
Well… not so much that last part. Unfortunately, as a result of the complications of South Africa’s own distinct age rating and classification system through the Film and Publications Board (as opposed to PEGI and ESRB in Europe and the US respectively), we’ve been left with a sad looking line-up of Xbox LIVE Arcade games.
Due to the process of rating games individually, it’s going to take some time for so many titles to show up on South Africa’s Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
Now, however, those lovely and awesome fellows and fellowettes at indie game developer The Behemoth (Castle Crashers, Alien Hominid) have shed a little more light on the process of getting games approved on Xbox LIVE Arcade, and in the process, have promised that they will be “jumping through hoops” and “jumping on trampolines” to get their games on the South African Marketplace as soon as possible.
In the year 2000, Sony’s PlayStation 2 was launched worldwide, and over its lifetime it’s accrued quite a library of classic titles, from your Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid games, to Gran Turismo and Resident Evil, as well as Devil May Cry, God of War, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, amongst many, many more.
Here at the tail-end of 2009, the PlayStation 2 is officially being released in Brazil, with a selection of over 14 titles to choose from, as Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) expands its business to Latin America. From the press release:
“Starting this November, Brazil’s gaming and entertainment enthusiasts can snap up the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, the best selling system in the world, and dozens of PlayStation 2 software titles for purchase at over a thousand retail stores across the country.”
“Brazil is home to a large community of gaming enthusiasts, making the country an ideal opportunity for SCEA to introduce the PlayStation experience to a new legion of fans.”
Over the course of the Game Developers Conference during the tail-end of March this year, news of the cloud-computing gaming service, OnLive, sadly overshadowed the official unveiling of the Zeebo console, a gaming device that plugs directly into your TV and operates on a completely wireless distribution network, implementing traditional cellphone technologies for communication online.
The Zeebo console, aimed primarily at third-world and emerging first-world markets, comes pre-loaded with three games, namely Need for Speed Carbon, Fifa 2009 and Brain Challenge.
Additional games, Quake 1, Quake II and Prey Evil, are also available for free via download, while more games are planned to become available for purchase and download soon. All of the games are localised in Portugese.
It was announced yesterday, though, that Zeebo has officially been launched in its first test market, Brazil, at a cost of $249, which is estimated to be a third of the amount Brazilians can expect to pay for a traditional videogame console.
CEO of Tectoy, Fernando Fischer, who is handling marketing and distribution of Zeebo in Brazil, said of the launch:
- Free Skyrim DLC and Skyrim Creation Kit!
- Uncharted 3: How to correct the Trophy Sync Error in multiplayer
- Friends of Design are Friends Indeed: Cape Town gamers congregate on campus
- Win one of three 3D TVs plus an awesome PS3 bundle with Afrihost and El33tonline
- UFC Undisputed 3 Hands-on Preview
- Nintendo Network announced, will deliver Xbox LIVE and PSN services
