It’s being reported that the creators of Rock Band, Harmonix, will not be releasing a third iteration of the music-game, Rock Band, this year as they are intent on focussing on their announced Beatles spin-off game. Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopolous said:

Rock Band 2“We’ve actually made a choice to break out of the annual release cycle for Rock Band this year. “[This is] partly because the annual cycle places limits on the choices you can make as a developer. We’re trying to take a long term view.”

Distributed by EA Partners and published by MTV Games, the Rock Band series has been highly successful in turning gamers away from the Guitar Hero series, instead introducing players to a full band experience, releasing Rock Band in 2007 and Rock Band 2 last year, a schedule that will now be broken with the Beatles game. EA, used to an annual release schedule for their associated brands, has apparently been accepting of the break in iterations, says Rigopolous:

“Well, I’m sure they’d take [Rock Band 3] if we gave it to them, but they know how important this series is and they’re willing to give it the time it needs.” Rigopolous also mentioned his desire to work with another band once the Beatles game is complete, saying he would love to do something with Led Zeppelin.

The Beatles“Today we’re announcing an exclusive partnership with Apple Corps, MTV Games and Harmonix to create a brand-new video game featuring the iconic music of The Beatles. We’re not in the business of producing standalone games for every artist that’s out there… but [for] a monumental band like The Beatles, it’s the perfect confluence.”

Apple Corps CEO Jeff Jones added some further significance to the announcement, commenting that this would be the first time music from The Beatles has ever been signed for an appearance in a video game, continuing by saying, “In MTV and Harmonix, we see partners that admire The Beatles and Apple’s original spirit and vision.”

The game is only due out next Christmas and will be a completely new product, not to be viewed as an expansion to Rock Band, but as its own game not confined to the Rock Band franchise, as Harmonix’s Alex Rigopoulos enthused:
