So, the long and short of this story is that EA and DICE seemingly promised PlayStation 3 players a free copy of the downloadable shooter, Battlefield 1943, with the purchase of Battlefield 3.

Following the release of Battlefield 3, however, the deal seemed to be off as EA made no further noise about it. Disgruntled gamers even filed a class action lawsuit against EA in an effort to get the game as it looked as though the publisher had gone back on its word.

Following an investor visit to Electronic Arts, everybody’s favourite videogame market analyst, Michael Pachter, returned with the news that the mega-publisher plans to implement a strategy in the future that will see the company releasing of what Pachter calls “premium downloadable content,” which will be followed up with a full-blown packaged release of the game, including that premium content.

Electronic Arts LogoThe example used (and it must be stressed that it is an example), is that of the downloadable online multiplayer game Battlefield 1943, which released last year on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the PlayStation Store for $15. According to this new strategy, Battlefield 1943 would represent the premium DLC, while a full packaged product would follow, including the content contained within Battlefield 1943, plus more besides, for a full retail price of $60.

Battlefield 1943 Bad LogoIn a posting on DICE designer Gustav Halling’s blog (so many postings!), it has been revealed that the upcoming, recently announced Battlefield 1943 will be coming to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC… as a download-only game.

While answering a bunch of questions he was apparently drilled with in a Swedish Battlefield community Q&A recently, Halling writes:

Q: Is BF1943 a “Internet browser” game?

A: No, BF1943 is not a Internet browser game, it’s a download-only game on X360, PS3 & PC. “

These comments appear to shed light on a statement made in a recent press release, simply saying:

“To get ready for the assault this winter, players can prepare for action in Battlefield 1943, an all-new multiplayer game available this summer via PlayStation®Store, Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace and on the PC.”
