So the rumours were true: Corporate Executive Officer and Executive Deputy President of Sony Corporation and president of the Consumer Products and Services Group (i.e. head of Sony Computer Entertainment) has today been named president and CEO of Sony Corporation.
Current president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer will remain in his roles until April 1st, at which time Hirai will officially take on his new duties.
Hirai said of his promotion:
The last few years have seen Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) shift their focus away from Japan to North America and Europe, where the majority of their customers reside. This was abundantly clear during the recent PSN outage when service was initially restored to North America followed closely by Europe. Asia had to wait an additional couple of weeks before the PSN service was restored, and Japan is still without the Playstation Store - more than two months after the PSN hack.
