In a last ditch effort to rid itself of an alien infestation, Xbox LIVE Marketplace has gone price-cut crazy with four pieces of downloadable content available through the service, all of which are teeming and undulating with extraterrestrial activity.
This week, Xbox LIVE Gold members are able to purchase and download the following games and bits of content at reduced prices:
According to a forum post by SEGA community manager Clumsyorchid, SEGA is to discontinue further title update support for console versions of Aliens VS Predator, despite promises of an upcoming patch back in March.
The news comes only one week after the release of a new multiplayer map pack for Rebellion’s Alien-infested first-person shooter.
Announcing the news, Clumsyorchid wrote on the official SEGA forums:
SEGA has announced that a new downloadable map pack for Rebellion’s Aliens VS Predator will be available in the middle of next week for Xbox 360 and PS3, and will contain four brand new multiplayer maps, as well as new weather types.
The latest PlayStation Store update for the US brings with it some interesting items, including (but not limited to) special price offers for 1942: Joint Strike and ecoshift, and a permanent price drop for Trine.
Also included today is the fifth episode of the reality ‘TV’ show, The Tester, the Aliens VS Predator Swarm Map Pack, the Dragon Age: Origins Awakening expansion, and a new downloadable PSP game called Patchwork Heroes.

Rebellion has said today that it will soon release a patch for the recently released Aliens VS Predator, which the studio says is a result of “analysis of player feedback” (the patch, not the game… oh ambiguity…).
Following the release of updates to the PC version of the game, as well as the integration of a dedicated server client, it’s now the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions’ turn, as the studio says:
SEGA has announced that four multiplayer maps that were previously only accessible through the purchase of the Special Edition of Aliens VS Predator will soon become available as downloadable content (DLC), releasing through Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the PlayStation Network next week.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 from EA and DICE released in the UK this past Friday and effortlessly stormed the warzone that is the weekly sales chart to claim the No. 1 position on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing.
Heavy Rain has released to thunderous acclaim, snatching the No. 1 position on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart on debut and becomes Sony Computer Entertainment’s first number one release in the UK since Killzone 2 this time last year.
This turn of events pushes last week’s No. 1, Aliens VS Predator (sales down 38%), to No. 2 on the chart, which dislodges Just Dance (sales down 12%) from its long-held No. 2 position, finally forcing it down to No. 3.
Aliens VS Predator is the latest game from franchise veterans Rebellion that allows gamers, as well as fans of the Alien and Predator universes (not mutually exclusive), to jump into the skins of the Marine (weak but endowed with heavy weaponry), the Alien (quick and terrifying) and the Predator (powerful and technologically savvy), as each faction meets one another in dark corridors, open jungles, Alien infested hallways and ancient temples in a battle for survival, using their specific strengths to ensure they don’t meet their end in a gory, explosive death.
As you run through these environments, it’s clear Rebellion has learned a thing or two, as far as presentation and spectacle is concerned, since the developer’s own Aliens VS Predator on the PC in 1999, and has moved with the times providing a game of undeniable visual quality and tense atmosphere, complete with classic sound effects (think Pulse Rifle fire and Alien squeals) to pull you straight into the experience, making a very good first impression that goes a long way to keeping you engaged.
As with all videogame first impressions, they may last, but if the underlying experience is too negatively intrusive, they fade fast which allows you to start focussing on this under par campaign structure and that poorly executed gameplay mechanic, which is exactly the case with Aliens VS Predator. As a singleplayer game, as detailed as the visuals may be, it feels half-finished and (to some degree) rushed, with sparkles of interest glittering here and there.
As a multiplayer game, however, the vision of Aliens VS Predator starts to shine through, and despite some flaws and connectivity issues, it’s the saving grace of the total package, becoming more than half of the reason you would consider picking the game up in the first place.
