Sony’s PS Vita launched across Japan this weekend into the clamouring hands of hundreds of thousands of eager gamers and early adopters, and despite a successful round of pre-orders, hundreds of people still lined up outside stores around the country to claim their handheld gaming machine as soon as possible.
Sony Computer Entertainment has been beaten down lately, no doubt about it.
Ever since the entertainment giant was forced to take the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services down on April 20th following malicious attacks by cybercriminals and so-called ‘hacktivists’ (activist hackers), Sony Computer Entertainment has been receiving a beating.
Welp, it seems we’ve all been duped by recent news that the PlayStation Network would return from its lengthy period of hibernation by May 31st, as Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) executive Patrick Seybold has corrected a recent news report on Bloomberg.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me…
According to a report on Bloomberg, a Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) spokesperson has stated that the PlayStation Network will be up by the end of the month, following nearly twenty full days of inoperability.
According to reports on Japanese tech sites Phileweb and AV Watch, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has confirmed recent rumours claiming that production of the company’s PSPgo portable gaming device has been discontinued, and only currently available stock of the handheld will be sold until depleted.
Once this stock is gone, the PSPgo will no longer be available on the market.
Following widespread reports earlier this week that Sony Computer Entertainment’s upcoming (all-singing, all-dancing) Next Generation Portable (NGP) handheld console would likely see a launch delay as a result of the recent tragedies and devastation wrought in Japan, a SCE Japan representative has denied the possibility of such a setback, pointing out that NGP was never formally announced for a worldwide 2011 release.
Speaking to the Nikkei news agency, SCEJ spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka said simply:
Posts on the US and European PlayStation Blogs today have revealed Sony Computer Entertainment’s official stance on ‘PS3 circumvention devices and pirated software,’ as well as actions to be taken against those who are found violating the system’s license agreement.
An official statement from SCE reads, in full, as follows:
Join us now as we journey into a world of magic and whimsy. A land jostling and heated with madness and chaos. A kingdom twisted and warped by regurgitated lies, half-truths and mirrored reality, all moulded into a lonesome form that would send you on a voyage of insanity with a single blink of its crusted eye.
Welcome to… ‘The Rumour Zone!’
Earlier today we reported that Sony’s PSPgo would see a price drop in the United States and Japan, with cuts coming into effect later this month.
Now, Sony has officially confirmed the news, adding that European territories will also enjoy a price cut for the ailing handheld gaming device.
According to a report on Reuters, Sony will officially drop the price of the company’s PSPgo handheld gaming device this month in Japan and the US, one year after the release of the console and just in time for the holiday season.
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced the existence of a new PSP bundle called the PSP JILL STUART ‘Sweet Limited Package,’ which was created in collaboration with American fashion designer Jill Stuart, and is set to release on March 4th in Japan, to coincide with the release of Sony’s Blossom Pink PSP system.
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) has announced its intention to postpone the release of the rabidly anticipated Gran Tursimo 5 racing simulator in the region for the period of one month.
The title was previously expected to release in Japan in March, but is now ‘To Be Decided.’
Sony have announced that all future PSP titles developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) will be released not only on their native UMD physical media, but will also be made available through a download simultaneously, as the PSP will now have direct access to the PlayStation Store.
This dual-release policy will be exhibited by SCEJ next release, Destroy All Heroes 2, which will be available on UMD and on the PS Store. Other games set to release in this fashion include the following:
- Free Skyrim DLC and Skyrim Creation Kit!
- CoD: Black Ops Double XP Weekend on Friday, vote for next 24/7 map!
- Uncharted 3: How to correct the Trophy Sync Error in multiplayer
- Friends of Design are Friends Indeed: Cape Town gamers congregate on campus
- Win one of three 3D TVs plus an awesome PS3 bundle with Afrihost and El33tonline
