It was announced today that Performance Designed Products (PDP), a gaming accessories company, has acquired In2Games and their technologies. In2Games, a British and Hong Kong-based developer of motion sensing gaming technology, are the creators of the Gametrak Freedom, a motion controller for use with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The first image of the controller was also released today.
Using proprietary ultrasonic technology, Gametrak Freedom aims to provide a true motion capture gaming experience, accurately tracking the exact 3D position and movement of up to four players. The system comprises a base unit, which attaches to the console via USB, as well as a hand unit. The base unit consists of two sensor bars, which can either be attached to the TV or mounted on included stands. Chris Richards, President and CEO for the California-based PDP commented on the technology:
“Until now, gaming has been limited to the player interacting with the game although platforms such as the Wii have heightened this experience. Now, with the latest motion sensing technology created by In2Games, the game will interact with the player. We are extremely excited to bring this unparalleled technology to 1st Party console manufacturers, as well as 3rd Party Publishers and Developers to further heighten the level of game interaction with the player.”
The Gametrack Freedom, as well as a game based on the motion sensing technology called Squeeballs, is set for a 2009 launch, which will be coordinated with the launch of third-party titles also using the controller. Will it replace the Wii, though?
