It was another slow week for the Japanese console industry as sales figures continued to dwindle for the second week in a row. The 3DS was the only system that performed particularly well, with its latest tally of 45 752 units taking its lifetime sales in Japan past the six million mark.

3DS eShop Update 17/05/12

This week’s 3DS eShop update is only a couple of hours away so let’s take a look at the latest content drop. The main attraction is a demo for the excellent and consistently charming platformer Rayman Origins. The game hits retailers on June 8th so you’ll have a couple of weeks to put it through its paces before having to decide if it’s worth investing in.

Nintendo has released a small 3DS firmware update that needs to be downloaded before being able to access the eShop or play online. 3DS users have reported that the only visible change brought about by the new firmware is that a system update can now be performed without first having to enter a parental control pin.

Kingdom Hearts 3D CG 1

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance isn’t out in the West for over two months but that doesn’t mean we can’t build our anticipation levels for its release with some fantastic new footage. Yesterday Square Enix released a batch of new screenshots for the game and today we can get a good feel for the English version of KH3D thanks to a nine-minute trailer featuring a variety of cut-scenes and gameplay footage.

The 3DS may be last in line to receive Rayman Origins but that doesn’t mean it will be any less enjoyable than its PC, console and PS Vita counterparts. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the fantastically colourful and bizarre levels of this excellent platformer appear in stereoscopic 3D, and to see how Ubisoft has utilised the 3DS’ bottom touch screen to enhance gameplay.

NPD Group Logo Banner

US sales analyst firm The NPD Group has released its latest report on the state of the country’s videogame industry with data on sales for the month of April 2012, revealing a worrying 32% drop in sales across hardware, software and accessory categories.

Revenue generated in the US videogame industry during the reporting period dropped from $930.9 million in April 2011 to $630.4 million this year, mostly due to a lack of new game releases and an early Easter period, as Prototype 2 and Xbox 360 topped their respective categories.

Golden Week is usually a highly profitable period for the Japanese videogame industry as it provides people with four days off work/school to put their feet up and play some games. The 3DS benefited the greatest from this sales surge, with its weekly tally up 24% from the previous result. The Wii also performed well (sales up by 72%) to snatch fourth position from the PS Vita.

3DS eShop Update 03/05/12

This week’s eShop update serves up something a little special for 3DS gamers who are old enough to remember Nintendo’s Game & Watch series that proved a massive success during the 80s. The Game & Watch Gallery 2 can be found under the Virtual Console section of the eShop and includes five classic titles that are playable in both their original and remastered forms.
