EL33TONLINE: News tag archive: 2upgamers
It is with a smile on my face that I say this as an El33tonline columnist - 2upGamers monthly events are a pleasure to report on. Not only do I have fun at every single event, not only is there always an awesome line-up of guests, as well as an awesome list of announcements each and every time, but I get to meet new people and connect with good friends, and I’m quite confident that this is an opinion shared by many who have attended. In fact, of the friends I convince to come along with me, I don’t even have to ask them to come to the next one as they end up registering before me!
On Monday, the date and time for 2upGamers’ fifth gaming event was confirmed, while we also discovered the whopping line-up of guests slated to appear at this week’s gathering - 2upGamers’ 5th Round hits Cape Town this Friday, May 4th, starting at 6:30pm at the Rygersdal Sports Club in Rondebosch and, guess what?
Registration for the event is now open.
2upGamers may have already brought you a bounty of gaming nirvana last week with its Prototype 2 launch event in Cape Town, but Glenn Alexander and the team will be doing it all over again this week with the ‘5th Round’ at the Rygersdal Sports Club.
One of the most anticipated titles of 2012 has finally hit South African shores in the form of Prototype 2, and to celebrate the release of this sequel to the 2009 action game, a large and lively group of gamers flooded the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosebank to attend an exciting launch party, co-hosted by JHBGamers, 2upGamers and Megarom.
Last Friday’s 2upGamers 4th Dimension event was another great success for participating sponsors, speakers and attendees alike. Held at Rygersdal Sports Club in Rondebosch Cape Town, the 4th 2upGamers meeting was attended by around 80 people and saw prizes with a collective value of R40 000 being given away!
This Friday past, March 2nd, had the Cape Town gaming scene buzzing with excitement courtesy of the biggest and best 2upGamers thus far, the 4th Dimension.
Hosted at the Rygersdal Sports Club in Rondebosch Cape Town, the 4th Dimension garnered the second largest audience yet and up to 80 attendees were present and ready for the awesome line-up that 2upGamers had in store.
Speakers featured were Cape Town Showdown, Clan Connection and GamerNET, and awesome prizes by Friends of Design, Takealot and EA to the value of R40 000 were begging to be won! Talk about a high-profile event! Let’s delve deeper into what went down.
Gamers of Cape Town, it’s time to suit up and get ready for the unknown as event organisers 2upGamers prepare to take you to the mystical and exciting ‘4th Dimension!’
Or something like that!
After hosting three incredible and highly successful gaming events in Cape Town since November 2011, 2upGamers presents the fourth in the series, 4th Dimension, taking place this Friday in Rondebosch - will you be there? Details below!
For South African gamers, 2012 was kicked off with a series of awesome gaming events spread out across the country. Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town all got in on the act and thanks to the efforts of the organisers, these cities all played host to wonderful gatherings of gamers.
El33tonline undertook a mission to attend four separate meet-ups taking place across these three cities and we’re pleased to say that our quest was a complete success!
Here’s our round-up of El33tonline’s coverage of these events:
El33tonline wasn’t the only crew touring gaming events in South Africa during the week of January 16th, as EA South Africa and a very special guest all the way from Australia were also making the rounds to attend gatherings of gamers in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
EA South Africa’s Ralph Spinks and Bianca McFadyen, along with EA Australia’s Brad Pidgeon, recently visited a number of gaming events in the country to meet with the gamers of Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as to extend EA’s message of community to gamers.
To date, Glenn Alexander and the team at 2upGamers have successfully run three amazing events for the gamers of Cape Town, complete with interesting guest speakers, food, drink and some of the latest games to play.
As 2upGamers has expanded so rapidly, the team was in need of a suitable location to host their gatherings with enough room for over 100 people to move, eat and chat (with room for swinging arms and legs to avoid damage during dance games, too).
Beginning with the Second Wave event in November, Cape Town-based digital design studio Friends of Design came to the rescue by volunteering its campus space to host these get-togethers, and thanks to them, Cape Town gamers have reaped the benefits of 2upGamers’ hard work and have been able to enjoy two additional highly successful gaming gatherings following the inaugural event in October.
Who or what is Friends of Design? Let’s have a look.
South African online retailer TakeALot has gone through a massive transformation over the last year - it was only a few months ago that the company was more well-known as the award-winning Take2, but now after a name change and a fresh, user-friendly website overhaul, TakeALot is now poised to continue on from its successes to become the country’s premier online destination for all of your entertainment product needs.
TakeALot’s Andrew Royal was at 2upGamers’ recent Third Encounter gaming event to let the audience know about the retailer’s community initiatives and an awesome TakeALot competition, as well as give away three limited edition versions of Mass Effect 3!
Gamers in Cape Town are a very enthusiastic bunch, it must be said. During the presentations at 2upGamers’ recent Third Encounter gaming event, none of the attendees were stingy with their voices, cheering and clapping for all of the guest speakers and their exciting announcements.
The enthusiasm of the gamers of Cape Town was also demonstrated by the fact that dozens of Third Encounter attendees arrived at Friends of Design (the location for the event) well ahead of the scheduled time and stayed late into the evening, which gave El33tonline the chance to snap a few pics of these creatures in their natural habitat…
2upGamers’ recent Third Encounter event was a tremendously fun time - this much we already know - and gave the gamers of Cape Town (and two from Durban) a chance to meet, greet, eat and… beat one another in games of FIFA 12, Fight Night Champion and Need For Speed: The Run.
Third Encounter also gave Lisa and I the chance to meet (mostly for the first time) our fellow online gamers who we play Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3 and Uncharted 3 with - the perfect photo opportunity!
After two incredibly successful events held in November and December last year, Glenn Alexander and his team at 2upGamers once again hosted a brilliant gaming evening this past week in Cape Town, filled to the brim with games, interesting guest speakers, prizes, food, drink and, most importantly, friends.
The Third Encounter was an absolute blast!
Three cities visited. Thousands of kilometres travelled. Almost 200 gamers seen and met. One country. Not a lot of sleep.
This was El33tonline’s South African Gaming Tour, where we were on a mission to attend four separate gaming events taking place in the space of a single week across the country, all in an effort to meet with our fellow gamers, spread the word of El33tonline and dish out awesome prizes.
Mission accomplished.
