Electronic Arts LogoEA recently released its first quarter financial results, posting profits of $96 million for the period ending June 30th, up by some margin from a loss of $234 million during the same quarter last year.

Revenue was up to $815 million from $644 million last year, which represents growth of 27 percent. These solid results were due in part to the continued strong performance of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the iPad version of Scrabble, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and FIFA 10.

New Xbox 360 - Small Microsoft UK must be smiling this week, as not only has the company’s Crackdown 2 managed to hold onto the top spot on Chart Track’s Software Sales listing for the second week in a row, but the new and improved Xbox 360 250 GB has pulled off the biggest launch for a ‘revised’ home console in the UK, outperforming both the PS2 Slim and the PS3 Slim during their respective launches.

Chart Track says that the new Xbox 360 recorded over two days of sales comparable to the launch of the original Xbox 360 in late 2005, which the sales tracking firm notes is quite a feat considering the original console launched in two flavours – the Pro and Core.

Microsoft’s Crackdown 2 has read the riot act and managed to calm the advances of other titles up Chart Track’s UK Software Sales chart this past week, claiming the No. 1 spot on the listing while no-one was looking.

This position represents Microsoft’s first No. 1 All Formats chart ranking for 2010, and betters the debut chart appearance of the original Crackdown by one place.

LEGO Harry Potter XBLM Box ArtLast week LEGO Harry Potter knocked Red Dead Redemption out of the top spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, ending its five week streak as the top-selling game. This week Potter, Harry Potter, holds on to the number 1 spot for a second week despite a 14% drop in sales for Warner Bros’ LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1 – 4 in this last week of quarter 2.

And the next two top places also remain unchanged this week, with Red Dead Redemption at number 2 (sales down 18%) and Super Mario Galaxy 2 at number 3 (sales down 29%). EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 debuts at number 4, claiming the highest new entry for the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 title. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa slips one place to number 5.

LEGO Harry Potter XBLM Box ArtThe king is dead. Long live… Harry Potter? Dang.

Yes, the rumours are true. After five straight weeks atop Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, Red Dead Redemption has abdicated its kingly presence and made way for LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1 – 4, as this newcomer to the charts claims the throne and now sits at No. 1.

With this scandalous turn of events, Red Dead Redemption (sales down 32%) has to be content with No. 2 this week, which causes Super Mario Galaxy 2 (sales down 42%) to slip down to No. 3 from No. 2, and 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (sales down 36%) to step down to No. 4 from No. 3.

For the fifth week in a row, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption has landed at No. 1 on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, outselling other hit titles in the region including Super Mario Galaxy 2 and EA’s 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

This despite a 24% drop in overall sales for the Wild West open world shooter, helped along as sales of Super Mario Galaxy 2 (sitting at No. 2) fell by 29%, increasing the sales margin between the two titles by 4000 units compared to the week previous.

As of last week, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption has managed to hold onto the No. 1 position on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart for four weeks in a week (the first title to do so in 2010), despite a massive 34% drop in sales, simultaneously holding off an attack on the position by Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 during that game’s first week on sale.

Red Dead Redemption Box ArtFor the third week in a row, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption has shot up the competition and placed itself neatly at No. 1 on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, despite a 22% drop in sales compared to the previous week.

Chart Track informs us that the total sales of Red Dead Redemption this week are more than the combined sales of the games at positions 2 to 7 on the chart, so it looks like the game still has some to enjoy its stay at the top of the ranking.

As is EA’s wont, some folks at the publisher have gone and run some simulations for the upcoming, real-world 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa later this month and have come up with their predictions for how the tournament is going to go down.

And as far as the simulation predicts, it’s going to be a terrible event for the hosts as EA says that South Africa will be the first team knocked out of the tournament, after being bundled out by France, Uruguay and Mexico in Group A.

Red Dead Redemption Box ArtIn a week filled with blockbuster new videogame releases, only one could claim to be the best selling of them all, and according to data from Chart Track, Red Dead Redemption is last week’s No. 1 on the UK Software Sales Chart.

Despite overwhelming popularity on online retailer Amazon UK and (maybe because of) extensive unit shortages of the game in the region, Red Dead Redemption is only the 11th best seller, in terms of weekly sales, in the UK.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Logo This past week in Japan saw the DS title Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP continue their streak of sales dominance, both sitting atop Media Create’s Software Sales Chart for the region, at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, despite massive drops in sales from the week previous.

For anyone living in South Africa there have only really been two items in the news lately that had people talking. Since we won’t get into politics we can skip the Julius Malema stories and head straight into something that is actually newsworthy: the FIFA World Cup! FIFA fever has hit the country and the excitement is almost tangible! People are wearing their football jerseys and you can hear random vuvuzela’s all throughout the day. But be careful what you wear, and where you buy your World Cup merchandise as FIFA is keeping a very tight leash on their licensing. This ensures, most importantly to FIFA, a constant revenue stream. It also ensures a certain level of quality and authenticity. It’s a good thing then that EA Sports’ latest football title is an Officially Licensed FIFA Product, with authentic hologram and all. But does it provide an authentic World Cup experience to us gamers? Heck yes it does!
