The third meeting of DBNGamers this past Saturday once again saw a growth in attendees. After our first ever meeting at the beginning of December 2011 where seven of us huddled around and casually chatted about games and geek stuff, the latest gathering of gamers in Durban grew to 24 people (up again from our second meet-up), with many more waiting in the wings.
You know who you are.
After a successful meet-up in January it was decided that we would once again get together on February 18th at Pizzetta Pizzeria, a great little pizza place found in one of the many winding, hilly roads of Glenwood (not far from Glenwood High School and literally around the corner from Olive & Oil).
The Pizzetta staff had to wind a collection of tables around one half of the restaurant to accommodate all of us, but despite our rowdy nature and unpredictable noise levels (see photos below), the managers and waiters were extra friendly and often showed great interest in our discussions - chances to ‘convert’ some non-gamers!
“Never a dull moment with El33tonline around,” as El33tonline Editor-in-Chief Lisa has wryly quipped before, but I’m pleased to say that there was nothing wry about the statement at the latest DBNGamers meet-up.
As Lisa and Wayne floated about sparking conversation, Tom provided deep, thoughtful discussion, while the booming laughter and raucous comments emanating from Oltman, Bryan and Russell at the centre tables was cause for much entertainment - speaking objectively (I arrived ‘on the scene’ very late) the El33tonline crew acted as great bastions for friendly, approachable gamers. People we all aspire to be.
It was wonderful to see:
Of course, without the background work of Pieter (also known as POItjie), DBNGamers wouldn’t be in its current form nor would it be enjoying its current success, so thanks to him for his dedication!
Also thanks to him for rustling up some prizes from EA South Africa in the form of some of the latest games! Games like Battlefield 3, NHL 12, Dragon Age 2 and Need For Speed: The Run! Many attendees walked away with a prize - here they are (well, most of them):

Comments:
I would have came, but my friend, who has a car, says he can't drive to that side a day before. Such a let down. I got my revenge though. I made him listen to the MuiMui music in LocoRoco 2, he despises that game, and never help him in Monster Hunter. Revenge was sweet :P
Thanks once again to everyone involved in organising the event. It was great to meet some new faces.
Hopefully next time - and at the next venue? - we'll get to mingle more. Otherwise, maybe we should enact some forced seat swapping at various times during the afternoon;)
It's cool to see so many of you guys. I wish I could have been there :(
Hope to see you there next time hellblazer!
I agree pfangirl, some table swapping is required next time to mingle more!
@Bearded_Warrior If you're ever in the neighbourhood we'd love to have you there too!
Well just fly over on your private jet then Beardie! ;) Would be cool to have you here, we'll get you set up on a TV via Skype one day, how's that? ;)
Agreed Noelle - maybe we can use the last trickles of Summer to do something at a park (water or otherwise) or the beach or something like that. Or just forced seat swapping ;)
Sorry you couldn't make it Monsieur Hellblazer, you need to lock that friend down next time for sure! We'll try to let you know well ahead of time so you can make plans to get there, hope to see you at the next one.
wow you guys and Galz are growing and growing. wow nice going guys Poiltjie i everywhere and thats good man ;). i cant wait for 2upGamerssssss
Noelle's just saying that because she had to talk to me the whole afternoon ;P
Seriously, though, if it's at a sit-down venue, a seat swap at some point (maybe after everyone's finished eating, as the event still goes on for a while after that) would probably be good so you can meet more people at each event.
Saturday's meet up was good fun, though, looking forward to the next one.
Haha, don't be so hard on yourself, that can't be the only reason... ;)
Hmm, maybe we can make a game of it, we're gamers after all. Sounds like a challenge to me! Some sort of card game with values attached and you're trying to make your way towards a certain point on the table by trading cards...
Hmm...
It could be called Magic: The Swop-ening! ;)
Wow Oliver, I think you broke the el33tonline record for highest number of occurrences of "Ricky Martin" in one article...You're going to start influencing Google results at this rate ;)
Thanks to everyone for organizing the meet-up. See you at the next one!
I think this day was awesome, DBNGamers is going to get even bigger and better, E3 watch this space, its really good to see all those new ppl and now Ray can join us on the battle field and then lose his tags...POItjie has done an awesome job.
Nah Ricky, if I was going for a record, I would have found many more excuses to summon The Latin Spirit. I think I've got it out of my system now, so you're safe... for now. ;)
See you next time! Maybe you can help me design that game to get people shuffling around the tables. It wouldn't be like musical chairs where we're swapping every 10 seconds, or even every ten minutes. Half an hour sounds about right. I need a fellow game developer! ;)
How about 'Magic: The Summoning of Ricky Martin - Spirit of the Latin Dancer'?
Arg, I can't help it! ;)
Every half an hour you have to shake your bon bon to another seat.
That guy Russell always seems to be eating ... can't figure that out??
Also - congratulations again to Wesley (AKA WezFlash) for winning a silver piece box!
WRT moving seats, I think if there's an incentive like, say, maybe a prize or two for the person that mingles the most then it would work nicely ... heck, I may even be willing to disperse from Russell and Oltman. Oh, and incidentally, you ask what we were up to in that one picture? We were plotting how we could take over the website and rename it from El33tonline to BROonline ... not sure if anyone out there would support us but it's worth a shot :)
Awww Brattex - thought no one had noticed but, I do have a figure to maintain after all.
:) It was great fun to meet fellow geeks and gamers. Can't wait for the next one :)
awesome write up os! love the photo comments(-: thanks wayne for taking all those great snaps! some truly outlandish moments were captured for sure...(-:
