January NPD: Momentum continues, says Sony, as PS Vita readies for launch

Sony Computer Entertainment Logo (Squat 2) While Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) is yet to provide sales numbers for the PlayStation 3 during the month of January 2012 in the US, the company has sent out a statement in response to NPD’s recent industry sales report.

Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA Patrick Seybold wrote:

“Following a strong December at retail, PlayStation continued the momentum in January through multi-retailer promotions such as ‘Play Days’ where we saw a 2x lift over forecast in peripheral sales and solid results for the PlayStation 3.

“February will be a landmark month for PlayStation and the gaming industry with the launch of PlayStation Vita on February 22. Pre-order sales for PS Vita and the launch lineup of 25 titles continue to accelerate as more consumers seek the ultimate in handheld gameplay.”

Do you reckon we’ll hear official sales numbers from SCEA or do you think the company will be content to keep those figures locked away?

270 000 Xbox 360s were sold in January 2012, making it the top-selling console in the country by far, Microsoft has claimed. PlayStation 3 sales can’t be too healthy, then.
