December was a massive month for the 3DS in Japan. Nintendo sold a whopping 1 492 931 systems during December according to retail tracker Enterbrain, accounting for 36% of all 3DS sales during 2011.
This is the highest monthly sales total for any console since Enterbrain started tracking Japanese retail data back in 1997.
Nintendo certainly got their combinations right during the holiday season to achieve this historical result. They sold the 3DS at an affordable price point (around ¥14 000) and ensured that consumers had three huge titles to play during the holidays: Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and Monster Hunter 3G.
Judging by the sales data, Nintendo must have also marketed the 3DS intelligently during the holiday season, although those of us in the West only have a few Japanese adverts posted on YouTube to go by.
Other console companies will need to replicate this combination of solid marketing, affordable hardware and bevy of high profile software releases if they are going to challenge the 3DS’ impressive new record.

That is one huge number for 3DS consoles in one country in one month. Wonder how the numbers are going to look like in the US and Europe.
That is hectic, I would love to get my hands on one of these. But I'll have to wait. want the PS Vita first. But well done Nintendo, well Done.
lol what a fairytale ending for Nintendo ... When their console first released they were worried about the poor sales figures and had to settle for a pricecut. Now just a few months later Nintendo has re-secured it's position as the powerhouse of console manufacturers. WOOP for them \o/
