Nintendo scored big with the 3DS this holiday season, selling approximately 2.35 million systems in the US during the last two months of 2011.
Of course, this was largely due to the might of Mario, with both Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 providing a great incentive for consumers to purchase a 3DS and experience these two critical darlings during the holidays.
The 3DS has now sold 4 million units in North America, and another 4.1 million in Japan where recent weekly sales figures have approached 500 000 on more than one occasion.
Despite a shaky start, the 3DS now looks poised to have a bumper 2012 thanks to the sales momentum created during the holidays together with a slate of upcoming third-party titles such as Resident Evil: Revelations, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney.
Do you think the 3DS can match the enormous success of its predecessor despite the decline of the dedicated handheld market? Let us know in the comments section below.

I'm happy for Nintendo that they're doing so well with their new little console, albeit a little surprised. Who knew the 3DS would do so well?! :O
