El33t's Question of the Day: Have you enjoyed a game sequel created by a different developer?

El33tonline Question of the Day

With the recent (rather disappointing) news that Insomniac Games will no longer be working in the Resistance franchise of first-person shooter titles (a franchise the studio created), we got to thinking about which developer might take up the series’ reigns and continue to create Resistance titles.

‘Naturally,’ this lead to thoughts on the trend of a second developer continuing the work of the first one and continuing the franchise in their stead, so our Question of the Day is:

Have you enjoyed a game sequel created by a different developer?

Examples of this numerous:

Day One Studios continued the FEAR franchise, Obsidian continued the Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic and Dungeon Siege franchises, and Rockstar bought the rights to Max Payne and is now working on Max Payne 3.

In addition, Capcom has worked on major Nintendo franchises and Super Mario Galaxy (and others) were created at a whole different Nintendo studio. Dead Rising 2 was created by Blue Castle Games in Canada and the Tomb Raider franchise was revitalised by Crystal Dynamics.

Not to mention the raft of official add-on packs released in the nineties for Quake, DOOM and other first-person shooters.

Are there other examples that come to mind? Have you enjoyed the sequel to a game franchise that wasn’t created by the original developer?

(If you have a Question of the Day that you would like to put to the El33tonline community, mail it to oliver[@]el33tonline.com and we’ll send it out, with credit of course!)

I enjoyed some sequels. The Doom 3 Expansion was good. F.e.a.r is another example, I actulally enjoy 99.9% of all my games. No matter the developer..

i hated naruto ninja storm 2... it was disgusting

The Doom 3 expansion instantly shot to mind, followed soon after by Wolfenstein to some extent.

But then you guys mentioned Crystal Dynamics and I have to say, the last few Tomb Raider games have been exceptional, so there's that as well.

I think Raven and Obsidian have earned reputations as B-rated sequel makers, but some of the stuff they come out with every now and then actually performs wonderfully.

Oliver

Didn't CyberConnect2 work on both Ninja Storm games?

Sameer Parker

F1 2011 - created by CodeMasters. Infinitely better than the previous games as it focused more on the ease of driving than the previous 'overly technical' incarnations of the franchise.

Oliver

Good one Sameer! I hadn't thought of that.

I still have the DOOM 3 expansion sitting on my shelf, hardly played. I always rated Nerve as an excellent developer, whatever happened to them, I wonder? Absorbed into Activision? They should have had a chance to make their own game ;(

BEANIBIL1TY

yes oliver but naruto rise of a ninja and brocken bonds were done on xbox by ubisoft and i would of liked it if they made the 3rd one with its shweet graphics, fighting style, gameplay... it was awsome until they took the tree jumping and wall running out.

BEANIBIL1TY

naruto is the second thing next to mx xbox when it comes to entertainment, just think that they should have put a little more thought into the 3rd one. the game has no feeling

Oliver

Oh I see what you're saying about the Naruto franchise, thanks for clarification - sorry for the confusion ;)

Sorry to hear that the Naruto series of games has gone down in quality, I definitely hope you'll get a deserving title in the future. Naruto is the only anime series I've watched with any enthusiasm - it's fantastic!

BEANIBIL1TY

haha, i want a bleach game on xbox :(.... if they do decide to they should do in in a dmc style and not arcade (round one fight) would be epic

Guitar Hero. Then again, not much changed between versions, developers, or even systems. It was great when it was still Konami's original idea, brill when Harmonix did the original development, great fun with Neversoft taking dev duties, and even Vicarious Visions DS versions were great fun. Most of the other long-running franchises I enjoy have been pretty stable: Ratchet and Clank, Zelda, Final Fantasy, etc. Even though Dragon Quest's studio, Enix, was bought by Square, it wasn't so much a "change of developers" as bringing two great RPG dev houses together.

@BEANIBIL1TY I would KILL...well, seriously MAIM...to see a decent non-arcade-fighter Bleach game (Soul Carnival doesn't count...we never got that game!) Doubt it'd happen, but imagine the fun of taking Ichigo for a nice, relaxing fight through Karakura against a few hundred Hollow. Or even fighting against...well...spoilers :) Would also make for a decent co-op game if Rukia (or any of the others, for that matter) fought with. Come on world! Do this already!!

Fullmetal MDK

If they decide to make a Bleach game will most likely be a beat em up or brawler like Super bros melee and will only be released in Japan, i would also like they make a new Fullmetal Alchemist game. For me Day One didn't do a great job with the Fear expansions it starts alright but gets boring later on with no scary stuff to speak about.

Smuroh

for me its not an issue as long as the story holds true and the gameplay is good i will support it.

Thanticore

Jak and Daxter series was developed by Naughty Dog, after which they passed the IP on.

I really enjoyed Daxter, the PSP game, that was developed by this other company. It nailed the vibe and humour of the game.

MacDeath_ZA

Obsidian is a bit confusing really ... They made NWN2, SWTOR2 and Fallout: NV (excuse the abbreviations, saving virtual trees here :P) all of which were AMAZING sequels! Buut ... then they made DS3 :/ and their new IPs aren't great either
