2012 is the year of survival horror games, no doubt about it.
The long-awaited AMY was recently released (to a bit of a tepid reception), March will see the release of no less than three Silent Hill games, and then in late November, Resident Evil 6 will hit.
Horror or survival horror? Call it what you want but when a behemoth of a monster is barrelling towards you intent on crushing your skull with its reaching tendrils, you’re going to grip the controller very tightly, irrespective of genre!
So here’s a Question of the Day for you:
Do you enjoy horror games?
The popularisation of horror in videogames with titles like Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil began over fifteen years ago, and while the genre has waned and evolved a bit, every year there are at least a handful of games to cater to fans of the genre.
Do you seek these titles out, or are you content to leave them on the shelf in favour of more action and/or family friendly games?
If you enjoy horror and survival horror games, which are some of your favourite? If you don’t enjoy the genre, what makes it so impenetrable for you?

I enjoy horror games, the best way to play them is in a dark room with only your screen/TV as the light source and headphones. I played all the F.E.A.R games like that, was even brave enough to play Dead Space like that. I need more Horror games.....
yes...back in the 90s :) todays games..no
not the biggest fan of horror games, although that doesn't necessarily stop e from playing them.
Resident evil has lost the rights to calling itself "horror" or "survival horror" they turned it into 3rd person action games
Back to the question I cant handle horror games dead space 1 had me screaming like a 8 year old girl never even made it past chapter 4
I am a huge fan of horror games, can still remember my first horror game i played Pac man. Guys are most likely saying WHAT!!!! Pacman horror game what is this guy smoking but think about it here you are pacman waiting for the robot to change so that you can cross the street the you spot some movement across the street and see there is some ghost coming towards you run the other way knocking out the lights thinking that the ghost cannot see you in the dark only to realise you are glowing like a neon sign with our yellow hoodie on. Now tell me isn't that horror for a 10 year old being chased by ghost.
@Viking you should try andplay Dead space in the dark with headphones....it helps making it "less" scary. trust me, that's how I got through the game, even though i was to scared to walk around in the dark after that........umm ignore that last part.
I agree with Fullmetal....pac man was really scary...all those ghost chasing you....makes you want to sit in the corner and pop pills to calm yourself down.....ok that sounded bad...
Resident Evil is one of my favourite series of all time. Viking, I think you should play it in the dark with the sound turned up and then report back on whether it's not a survival horror title! I also enjoyed Dead Space, but that's about as far as it goes for me.
On a serious not my first horror i played was Alien trilogy on PSone, now that game scared the bejeebers out of me everytime you hear that radar beep you panic like a little deer. Dead space scared me so much but i couldn't stop playing, its almost like a drug or adreniline rush and i complete it 100%. Still need to finish DS2 on the most difficult setting with only three saves in the whole game!!! :O
lol @Viking screaming like an 8-year old girl. I dont play horror games 'cause I'm such a scaredy-cat. I really want to play Dead Space, but I know I wont get far... Plus it's always worse AFTER you play the game when you think there's something lurking inside your closet or underneath your bed. I cannot sleep with open closets, because I imagine eyes staring at me from the darkness. I will get the guts to try one out one day though.
@fletbed - 100% agree!
I'm a huge wuss, so I don't particularly enjoy horror games. I prefer action to terror...
I don't have a problem playing horror games, even though I'm an 8 year old girl (wait what?!) ;) ... Although there was a stage 2 or 3 years ago where I couldn't play any horror games thanks to Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. The only way I managed to finish it was by playing it with a friend at his house :|
I used to enjoy everything horror, but now that I'm older (22) I just don't have the taste for it anymore. I'm actually sitting in movies, Underworld Awakening as recent example, and think "is that much gore really necessary?"
I know right! It's like I'm not even a gamer!
Thanticore that happens to many people, specially in my friend's group. We talked about that a while ago, how we all used to watch scary movies and those gory ones too, no problem. But now that we're a bit older we find the gore unnecessary and scary films we avoid them because they leave a nice little present in our subconscious. Strange that.
I love horror games, bring on the fear factor and adrenaline rush....but sadly horror games just arnt what they once were, hopefully something good comes out soon.
I love me some horror games. Resident Evil (not so scary anymore), Dead Space (Creeps the hell out of me), ALONE IN THE DARK (still need to finish that... anyone wanna lend it to me on xbox next year) and the one i never finished AMNESIA for pc. Only played it for 5min and crapped my pants just because of the atmosphere.
I will be getting RE6 in november and i will be doing the 6-man co-op on it as well with the multiplayer and of course... playing it alone in the dark
If your wondering why i said next year in pr build up paragraph cause ME3 is coming out in march thats why
@SKWEH I just started playing AMNESIA on the PC and i agree the atmosphere is hectic.
Hehehe I've finished Amnesia :D although I'm pretty sure my psyche is still as healthy (or unhealthy?) as before, I must say the game becomes quite disturbing towards the end ... Good luck to all trying to finish it!
