When it comes to videogames, there’s one thing I really don’t enjoy: Trying to re-learn the controls and re-invest myself in a game if I stay away for too long.
As recent examples, I’ve unfortunately dropped off of playing Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Darksiders with any amount of regularity, and both games require specific skills and knowledge to be fresh in your brain so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
I may just end up restarting them if I stay away for too much longer - a horrible cycle!
This Question of the Day then asks:
Do you restart games if you stay away too long?
If you stay away from a game for too long, do you simply brute-force your way back to familiarity or try to re-learn the controls and accumulated skills? Or do you take my route and simply restart the game to re-learn and re-invest from the ground up?
What games have you done this with, if any?

Comments:
I have never restarted a game, I've only replayed games after I have finished them. I battle it out if I can't remember the controls and try figure them out. sometimes I just go look under the controller options to see what they are and then I try my best......normally it is really quick then I'm back into the game like I never left.
I'm unfortunately cursed with some sort of variation of photographic memory :P
This happened to me with Assassins Creed Revelations. Since it's more or less the same control setup as Assassins Creed Brotherhood, its something I haven't played for more than 6 months!
But because of my curse, it didn't take more than an hour to get back into the controls again.
So to answer the question... NO I have never restarted a game because I forgot the controls :P
i restart the game specially games such as ninja blade, ninja gaiden, dmc and rpg's reason been is that there are so much things to do specialy combos, upgrades, stratergies ect... if i dont restart the game i get powned and gets frustrating
I can't recall having to restart a game because I fell out of touch with it, but it might have happened. I remember struggling for a bit in some games when I come back to them after a while and have to refamiliarise myself with the controls, but fortunately they weren't extremely difficult games (I can recall it happening with Darksiders and Enslaved). If that had happened in Ninja Gaiden 2, I don't know what I would have had to do.
Me restart a game because i forgot what to do, where i was going never!! I will just persevere eventually i will remember everything i was doing.
the worst is stopping a game halfway through a puzzle or a mission and you forgot what you were supposed to do !!!
I've restarted games such as Bioshock and Overlord just because I took a really long break from them, and felt that I had forgotten the story. The same was almost true for Fallout 3, but I decided that catching up 50 hours of gameplay was a bit much, so I didn't restart that one ;)
I can't remember ever doing that. I'm usually very diligent to finish a game once I start.
Nope, and I usually play like 5 to 20 games at the same time [I get distracted by new and shiney]
I did however restart Skyrim, due to the fact that I was not playing it properly :/
Ive never restarted a game no matter how rusty i get, i just may end up doing the same level quite a few times to get the hang of it again but i never restart, im always able to get right back into the story every time
A few times, having not played the game for many years with the story entirely forgotten.
Other times I usually remember the story, so just pick it up from wherever and carry on. I just did this recently with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, picking it up almost a year later, at chapter 3, and finishing it.
Timely question, as I just resumed Deus Ex: HR after 3 months. Started up my last save in a police station. For some reason I'm playing on Hard :P Took me a while to get used to the controls, the hacking, and the general idea of "Oh wait, I can sneak through a duct and avoid violence". Jensen is back...
I have restarted 2 games that I can remember, God of War 1 (PS2) which wasn't bad to do over, but the other game was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, which did take very, very long.... (excellent game though)
I restarted GTA IV a couple of times. Reason: I would play a few quests, get caught too busy, stop playing, and then decide to play again only to realize I've forgotten the controls... So, new game.
I still enjoy playing Half-Life 2 and all its episodes, starting fresh each time. I HAD to restart Skyrim as my Thieves Guild Quest Line broken and I was subsequently locked out of my Platinum Trophy. I want my platinum trophy.
Then there are games that are so awesome, I buy them again when they become cheaper (having sold off my previous copy to buy new games) and then love the story all over again! Recent example? Red Dead Redemption and Final Fantasy XIII.
