Call of Duty has in years gone by appeared at the top of the UK’s end-of-year entertainment property sales rankings, both in terms of units sold and overall revenue, but it looks as though 2011 was a little different.
Singer Adele has managed to outdo the world’s most dominant videogame with her latest album, ‘21,’ and in terms of unit sales at least, has outsold Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 by a margin of over one million copies.
Taking into account the price of a music album versus a copy of a game, Modern Warfare 3 is still safely the highest earner of last year in 2011, but that doesn’t make Adele’s feat any less notable.
The full Top Ten list of best-selling entertainment products in the UK last year follows below, with the rest of the games that made it into the Top Twenty also included:
- 1.) 21 - Adele (Album): 3 924 985 Units
- 2.) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Game): 2 814 609 Units
- 3.) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (Video): 2 532 551 Units
- 4.) FIFA 12 (Game): 2 193 302 Units
- 5.) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (Video): 2 147 606 Units
- 6.) The Inbetweeners Movie (Video): 2 074 652 Units
- 7.) The King’s Speech (Video): 1 882 175 Units
- 8.) Christmas - Michael Buble (Album): 1 349 195 Units
- 9.) Doo-Wop & Hooligans - Bruno Mars (Album): 1 264 763 Units
- 10.) 19 - Adele (Album): 1 264 273 Units
11.) Battlefield 3 (Game): 1 186 895 Units
16.) Zumba Fitness (Game): 1 077 508 Units
18.) The Elder Scrolls V (Game): Skyrim: 1 024 228 Units
That’s quite a whopping whoopin’ for Call of Duty, but this list is also very different overall from previous years where games have mainly dominated sales albums, box office and DVD/Blu-ray movies. I certainly would have expected FIFA 12 to be at least number two or three on the list!

Comments:
She does have a great voice. Rolling in the Deep is her best in my opinion. It has been severely overplayed now though and I can't enjoy it as much.
That's generally what happens, isn't it?
"Wow, this is a great singer/new band!"
One week later
"Gaaah! I'm sick of this singer/new band!"
Everytime I hear adele then I think of the first DBNgamers meet-up. we were all so "enjoying" the whole album being played full blast into our ears.
Make it stop....at least the next meet-up that won't happen.....
its funny she beat COD...LOL
As Gareth Cliff would say rolling in the mud in reference to her being huge lol but depressing music is depressing
To be fair, Adele's album was released in Jan, 2011, where MW3 and Skyrim were released in Nov, 2011. This means if you multiply their units by 6 roughly you get way more than Adele. No point in these stats.
Hmm, good point, but I wouldn't say there's no point to the numbers - they're still very interesting and we don't really know when the album sold the most. At release and over the holiday period, with accumulation in-between I would imagine.
'Evergreen' games notwithstanding, there's generally a sharp falloff in sales following release, so it's tough to say whether or not Modern Warfare would have approached anything able to eclipse Adele's album. Maybe it would have reached 5 million units if it launched at the beginning of 2011?
Adele will you marry me!!! lol just a fan joke. i love her Musico its fantastico. it just proofs that Adele is a better player, and not a COD KID lol
call of duty 9 years olf this year and there latest game sold 2 814 609 copies accross multiple platforms, gears of war is 6 years old and the latest game sold over 3 million in 10 days on 1 platform... nuf said... you cant compare games to music, every1 listerns to it but only a handfull plays games. and on the money side: a new release of a game is more then double the price of an audio cd so ubisoft still wins
