'Diablo III on console' adventures continue, PC still primary focus

A recent Twitter kerfuffle has lead many to believe that Blizzard Entertainment is working full-time on a console version of its upcoming Diablo III action RPG, with signs of a ‘confirmation’ arriving from the studio’s community manager Bashiok.

This isn’t exactly the case…

After being asked directly on Twitter whether or not Diablo 3 would be coming to console, Bashiok replied:

“Yup. Josh Mosqueira is lead designer for the Diablo console project.”

(Josh Mosqueira being a talented and very experienced real-time strategy designer who has worked on Relic games like Homeworld, Warhammer 40K and Company of Heroes.)

The most recent evidence we have of a console version of Diablo III being worked on is a late 2011 interview at Destructoid where Mosqueira said that there were “literally three people” on the console team trying to explore ways that Blizzard might go “back to the console.”

Following Bashiok’s Twitter post recently, however, he backtracked slightly and instead suggested that the console version of Diablo III is still being ‘explored:’

“”Yup” wasn’t meant to be an announcement. We’re still exploring a console version, but more importantly working on the PC/Mac version.”

So while we know that a console version of Diablo III is in the works and is on the way in the future, don’t get your hopes up for a simultaneous release with the PC and Mac versions of the game… or even a 2012 release, for that matter.

Naturally, it would make perfect sense for Blizzard to bring its titan of an action RPG to consoles, but the developer would of course have to transition the game’s heavy reliance on mouse-based input to controller-based input perfectly - direct control of the character would then become a must, wouldn’t it?

How do you think Diablo III would best be ported to the console? Would you play the game on console instead of PC?

I would love to play Diablo on Xbox or PS3 but i think it's best to leave it on pc. The pc community must also have there exclusives like console owners, i am not against a console port but i now it won't be handled by Blizzard. Activision will most likely hand over the port duty to one of other studios and the consoles version will get a rush job port for the holiday season.

Will they kindly please make up their minds! I need to know which I should pre-order. I still reckon that all games that are so heavily reliant on inventory can only be played on a PC though.

The fact that Blizzard have hired an entire console team for Diablo isn't confirmation that they will release a console version, but it does suggest that it won't be farmed out for a quick and dirty port if they do.

I think the only thing holding the console port back is the fact that Blizzard may not want to channel their fairly ruthless monetization of their products through a console channel, where they'd have to work within platform holders' policies and give them a cut, too.

I think its good that they will bring it to the consoles. I will stay with a PC version for now. They won't give this to another company to port as they are hiring new staff to handle the Console version. I think it will be like a Diablo 3 Lite on the Xbox. On that note, i Wish Torchlight 2 could come to Xbox....but will have to get the PC version. Games like these are fun on the console if done right just look at torchlight 1

i like the idea of a console version, but like POItjie i want the PC version just wanna stay true to the history of the game, cant wait to get this game its been a long wait.
