The latest NPD report has been released, revealing overall and individual sales performances in the US videogame industry for the month of August. Xbox 360 sales trumped market performances by both Sony and Nintendo’s consoles, but what do the big three publishers have to say about their own sales results during the month of August?
Nintendo
Nintendo’s response to August sales focussed on market performance of the 3DS and its value for consumers, noting that 235 000 3DS units were sold thanks to the recent price cut, down to $169.99.
185 000 3DS units were sold following the price cut, which represents a 260% increase compared to the comparable 19-day sales period in July.
Of course, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales and Marketing, Scott Moffitt, also made note of the next wave of 3DS games releasing soon, including Star Fox 64 3D, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.
Other milestones were achieved in August, too, as 190 000 Wii units were sold and 165 000 DS units, while five of the top ten and fifteen of the top twenty games sold during the month appear on a Nintendo console. 2011 has so far seen 50 million units of software sold for a Nintendo console, while a total of 540 million software units have been sold across all Nintendo platforms in the US.
Microsoft
As the holder of the overall top-selling console in the US this month, Microsoft had a lot to talk about and went on to note that Xbox 360 has sold more units in the US “than any other console for 14 of the past 15 months.”
Microsoft also took the opportunity to highlight its upcoming slate of games from September to November, with titles such as Gears of War 3, Forza 4, Dance Central 2, Kinect Sports: Season Two and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary all available in the space of two months.
Highlights for Microsoft in August included:
- Holding 43 percent share of the overall current-generation console market, Xbox 360 sold 308,000 units in August, maintaining the number-one console spot in the US for 2011. This marks the sixth month Xbox 360 has had more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share.
- Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in August (hardware, software and accessories) reached $232 million, the most for any console in the US
- During the month of August, the top two console game titles were for Xbox 360: Deus Ex: Human Revolution and NCAA Football 12.
Sony
Despite a recent price cut for the PlayStation 3 resulting in a healthy 218 000 units sold in August, Sony didn’t really toot its own horn too much this month…
… but Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA Patrick Seybold did claim that the PS3 has “the industry’s strongest lineup of exclusive titles, including Uncharted 3 and Everybody Dance,” which combined with the new PS3 price point and PlayStation Move, positions the company for “an amazing holiday season.”
