We’ve reached that point in the PS3 and Xbox 360’s life cycle when developers are having to make bold moves in order to offer a technically superior product to what we’ve experienced in the past.
One of the ways they’re doing this is by releasing games which consume more hard drive or disc space in order to achieve more detailed graphics or aural effects.
id Software’s Rage is the most recent example of this, utilising an 8GB mandatory install on PS3 and spanning 3 discs on Xbox 360.
These details were recently confirmed in an interview between Eurogamer and Tim Willits, creative director at id Software. He explained that the 8GB free space requirement on PS3 allows the game to “install all the textures to the highest level”, while the third disc on Xbox 360 features the title’s multiplayer component.
Rage will be released for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 4th in North America and October 7th in PAL territories.
