The Call of Duty XP event kicks off today: What to expect

A $1 million tournament? 6 000 Call of Duty fans? A performance by Kanye West? And the debut of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer?

It must be the inaugural Call of Duty XP event, kicking off today in Los Angeles.

For two days, 6 000 gamers from around the world will be treating themselves to Call of Duty nirvana as they all eat, sleep, drink and play the game starting this afternoon in the US on a massive 12-acre compound.

The sold-out event (tickets to which cost $150, with all proceeds going to a charity) will not only play host to a massive LAN area where select participants will compete for their share of a $1 million prize purse in Call of Duty: Black Ops, but there will be other awesome-sounding activities going on in and around the event, too.

This weekend will be the first time anyone outside of Activision, Infinity Ward or Sledgehammer Games has been able to play the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and the first time the public will get to go hands-on with the Spec Ops co-operative mode of the game, while the online Call of Duty Elite service will also be on show.

Watch an interview with Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling to find out more about this Spec Ops mode, and read El33tonline’s own hands-on preview of Spec Ops, as well as the Survival Mode.

A paintball arena, designed to replicate the infamous ‘Pit’ level from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in real life, will be present at the show for attendees to race through, while discussion panels and Q&A sessions with Call of Duty developers will also feature at the event. An on-site Call of Duty armoury and museum has also been set up to amuse and delight, while superstar Kanye West will perform, live at the show, to close out festivities.

In addition, every attendee at the Call of Duty XP event will receive a redemption code for a free copy of the limited Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition!

Here’s the full schedule - also watch below as Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling walks you through the event’s festivities:

And if none of that was enough, Activision and Treyarch will be hosting a multi-platform Double XP Weekend for Call of Duty: Black Ops, also starting today. For those of you staying at home and indulging in a bit of Black Ops to maximise your levelling speed, there will also be live-streams and blogs to let you know what’s happening in LA.

Look forward to El33tonline’s round-up of the major announcements coming out of the Call of Duty XP event, next week, but until then, watch these awesome recap videos detailing the preparations necessary for the event, as well as a fun video with AceyBongos:
