We always knew that there’d be tons of new PlayStation Vita details revealed at the Tokyo Game Show, but what we’ve seen and heard over the last couple of days is even more exciting than I initially imagined.
One of the biggest features announced for PS Vita so far has to be its ability to play PS3 titles via Remote Play. The PSP has a similar feature which allows you to remotely browse your PS3’s XMB, listen to music and watch movies on its hard drive, or play PSone Classics. A couple of PS3 games such as Lair can even be played remotely on PSP.
During a keynote address at TGS yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studio President Shuhei Yoshida revealed that PSV will allow you to play any PS3 game via Remote Play. He then demoed Killzone 3 being played remotely on PSV (video below), and showed how PS3 buttons which are absent from the device like L3 and R3 are mapped to the PSV’s rear touch panel.
Remote Play works by beaming video and audio from PS3 to PSV over WiFi, and controller inputs on PSV back to PS3. It’s a similar process to how the OnLive service for PC works.
It’ll be interesting to see if this form of Remote Play is available using PSV’s 3G connection, although the amount of bandwidth it would use would be excessive.
Even if you were just using a local WiFi network, I imagine the constant connection Remote Play requires would sap your PSV’s battery pretty quickly.
Still, it’s a great option to have if you really want to get your fix of Uncharted 3 multiplayer and your wife is busy watching her favourite series on TV. In this scenario you could simply play UC3 via Remote Play on your PSV, and level up from the comfort of your bed or poolside hammock.
