The destruction of RAGE: id Software shreds away the memories

As id Software heads into the homestretch of development on the studio’s upcoming blockbuster first-person shooter, RAGE, it seems as though there’s a little bit of cleaning up to do before the developer can finally put the finishing touches on its game and say goodbye to almost seven years of work.

It needs to shred some memories.

In what must be a common practice for any software developer that is constantly building and rebuilding versions of its product for testing purposes, id Software is shredding up discs (both DVDs and Blu-rays) that hold various forms of data and compiled code that make up the essence of RAGE.

Not all of these builds of the game made it, however, as RAGE design director Matt Hooper explains on Twitter, with a photo accompaniment:

“Shredding just a few of the “not quiet there” [Rage] builds. I wonder how many DVDs and Blu-rays we’ve gone through?”

How many indeed, especially considering that the Xbox 360 version of the game will ship on three DVDs!

We’re eagerly awaiting any mention of RAGE’s ‘gold status’ (when the game is ‘done’ and ready for mass production and shipment), but until then we’ll need to hold on until the release of RAGE on October 4th in North America and October 7th in Europe and the UK.

You can also get massive tastes of RAGE with El33tonline’s extensive previous coverage of the game with batches of screenshots, videos and information, but also look forward to our write-up on RAGE when we go hands-on with id Software’s next exciting title at gamescom 2011 in Cologne, Germany!
