Sales tracking and research firm The NPD Group recently released its report on US videogame sales for the month of June 2011, revealing revenues of $1.03 billion for the industry across software, hardware and accessories categories – a ten percent drop in sales compared to June 2010 when revenues of $1.15 billion were recorded.
June 2011 Software Sales
Sales in the software category during June 2011 in the US totalled $469.5 million, which represents a drop of twelve percent compared to the same period last year, or $531.3 million, while Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter reported that poor performance in Wii software sales contributed a whopping 75 percent to this decline – roughly $46 million.
Take 2’s LA Noire was once again the best-selling game this month following its dominant performance in May, while debut June release Duke Nukem Forever achieved a shaky second place on the sales listing, followed by inFamous 2 at third. Another debut title, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D appeared at fifth place after LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean, while new titles Shadows of the Damned and Alice: Madness Returns failed to enter the Top Ten.

June 2011 Hardware Sales
Videogame hardware sales dropped nine percent in June 2011, down to $366.6 million compared to June 2010’s revenues of $401.7 million. Xbox 360 was the top-selling console overall this month with a very impressive 507 000 units shifting off of store shelves.
The Xbox 360 was the only console to enjoy a year-over-year sales increase, thus breaking the PlayStation 3’s good run for the last few months.
Videogame accessories also saw decreases in revenue, down eleven percent to $158.9 million from $177.7 million, as sales of this category’s principle contributor, the Kinect for Xbox 360, begin to weaken.
