Following the release of the latest US videogame industry sales report by The NPD Group, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have each responded to the market performance of their consoles and games for the month of June 2011, with Microsoft having the most reasons to celebrate:
Microsoft
As revealed in the report, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold a very impressive 507 000 units during the reporting period of May 29th until July 2nd, which the company points out is nearly twice as much as the console’s closest home competitor this month, the PlayStation 3.
Microsoft also announced that Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console in the US for 12 of the past 13 months, while it was the only console to enjoy year-over-year sales growth in June (it sold 194 600 units in June 2010).
According to Microsoft, $350 million was spent on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories in June, which is up from June 2010’s total of $265 million.
Microsoft insists that Xbox 360 will continue its sales lead over the PlayStation 3 and Wii and sell more units than both of these consoles by the end of 2011, while the current line-up of Kinect-enabled titles will triple by this time, too.
Nintendo
Nintendo was this month keen to point out that the company sold over 800 000 hardware units across its Wii (273 000 units), DS (386 000 units) and 3DS (143 000 units) offerings, while “[e]ach product line saw double-digit growth over the previous month, and the lifetime US installed base for the Wii system crossed 36 million units.”
In addition, “Five of the top 10 and 13 of the top 25 best-selling individual software titles [are available on] Nintendo platforms.”
Sony
inFamous 2 and the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta were the focuses of Sony’s message in response to this month’s NPD sales report, but said nothing of the market performance of its PlayStation 3 console.
Sony revealed that inFamous 2 was the best-selling single SKU (stock-keeping unit) on any platform in June, outselling LA Noire and Duke Nukem Forever (both of these games are available on multiple platforms, while inFamous 2 is only available on PlayStation 3).
Senior director of corporate communications at SCEA Patrick Seybold noted:
“According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation continues to see growth in software with a strong demand for exclusive PlayStation 3 franchise titles. The recently launched Infamous 2 was the #1 software SKU in June.”
Sony also revealed that the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta was able to attract over 1.5 million users in the past week, which demonstrates “the strength of the PlayStation platform and consumers’ interest in gaming experiences that combine rich stories, challenging gameplay, and exhilarating 3D immersion,” says Seybold.
