E3 2011: Ubisoft announces Far Cry 3 for 2012 [Update]

[Update] Added the debut trailer for Far Cry 3. [End of Update]

The Far Cry series of first-person shooters has a very strange heritage, beginning life as an exciting jungle-based action game with open mission paths and clever AI (created by Crytek) before being run into the ground with a multitude of console ports and spin-offs, courtesy of Ubisoft.

In 2009, and after claiming the license, Ubisoft released Far Cry 2, a critical and commercial success with an altogether different take on the franchise but with a similar theme insofar as you could approach objectives in a variety of interesting ways, with new tools at your disposal thanks to newer technology.

Now at E3 2011, Ubisoft has confirmed rumours by formally announcing that that Far Cry 3 is in development, and is scheduled for a multiplatform release in 2012.

Development duties for Far Cry 3 have once again fallen to Ubisoft Montreal, with help from Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Massive. Far Cry 3 will place you in the boots of one Jason Brody, a man who happens to be stranded on a tropical island – much like the original Far Cry games.

Like Far Cry 2, however, you’ll have great freedom in deciding your own fate, and your actions will determine how the story progresses, and who your friends and enemies are.

Producer on Far Cry 3, Dan Hay said of the game:

“Far Cry 3 brings something new and unexpected, while still building upon the foundations of excellence that are inherent to the Far Cry brand. Whether you’re already a fan of the Far Cry series or jumping into the franchise for the very first time, you’re going to be blown away by the gritty story and epic adventure we’re going to deliver.”
