Many people in the gaming world were surprised when no mention was made of Grand Theft Auto V at E3 this year. It’s been over three years since Grand Theft Auto IV was released, and given the overwhelming success of that game it’s surprising that Rockstar North’s next GTA title has yet to be announced.
Although an official declaration of GTA V’s existence is notably absent, Gamespot recently reported that sources close to Rockstar Games have told them that development on the title is indeed underway, and is in fact so far advanced that final touches such as mini-games are currently being implemented. They went on to say that a 2012 release is looking likely and suggested that the game’s scale surpasses that of GTA IV.
Does this mean we can expect fighter planes, parachutes and bicycles like there were in San Andreas? When I played GTA IV I missed having these options, and was disappointed that there were no vast rural areas to explore like there were in GTA: San Andreas.
Rockstar Games seems to favour putting out a major title every year. 2010 was Red Dead Redemption; 2011 was L.A. Noire - surely 2012 is going to be the year GTA V makes its sure-to-be-mighty presence felt.
