The NPD results for May are out and Microsoft has already issued a response to bask in the glory of their victory.
We’re talking about the Xbox 360 being the top-selling console in the US last month with 270 000 units sold.
According to the Official Microsoft Blog Xbox 360 console sales were up 39% year-on-year during May, “the largest growth of any current generation console on the market.” May was also the 17th month of year-on-year hardware sales increases.
Microsoft also announced that Xbox game sales reached $140 million. Not surprising given the fact that four of the Top 10 software titles for May were for the Xbox 360, with LA Noire, Brink, Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat all earning top spots.
The publisher pointed out that total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in May, including hardware, software and accessories, reached $265 million, “still the highest among current generation consoles.”
Microsoft’s Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb also had his say about the NPD results on Twitter: “May #NPD’s are in: #Xbox is still number one in the US. Xbox sold 270k in May w/ sales up 39% year over year.”
Microsoft’s press release reads: “2011 continues to be the year of Xbox 360, selling more consoles than any other platform 11 of the past 12 months in the United States. In the seventh year of its lifecycle, Xbox 360 is on pace to have the biggest year in its history, a feat never achieved by any console in history.”
“The second half of 2011 promises to be monumental for Xbox 360 with the biggest blockbuster games, Kinect games and experiences, as well as movies, music and TV together all in one place. This will propel Xbox 360 to be number one worldwide by the end of the year, out-selling PlayStation 3 and Wii.”
