El33t’s Pre-W33kend Post: Duke Nukem Forever, Red Faction: Armageddon, and a good book

It’s almost time for the weekend, and it’s freezing cold here in Durban with an occasional spot of torrential rain!

What’s a gamer to do?

Keep the doors shut tight, dive under a blanket and indulge in some guilt-free gaming, that’s what!

This week has been incredibly hectic what with E3 2011 and all, so pick through El33tonline’s massive amount of news coverage, our latest reviews and a gigantic collection of competitions, all before finding out what members of El33tonline will be up to this weekend, and what games we’ll be playing (or not, as the case may be):

Oltman

“Its looking pretty bleak this weekend. Grey and windy, snow in the berg, and rain at the coast. So what better time than to play games, right? Wrong! I will be heading to the berg for a cozy weekend under the duvet in front of a fire place and reading a good book.

After a few hectic weeks of LA Noire, Witcher 2 and now inFamous 2 wrapped up, I deserve a break before I interrogate another lady working the till at Checkers to see if she is lying, or try to shoot electricity out of my hands to light the fire in the kitchen.

As with most things in life a healthy balance is always important when it comes to gaming. So remember to go empty out the pee pot you keep by your console and stretch your legs a bit. When I get back I will jump right back in with MX vs ATV Alive (yes, still…) and maybe some DiRT 3 when I see Tom.

Game on guys!”

A good, old book

  • It’s Friday, Friday!
  • Gotta get down on Friday!
  • Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend!
  • PS3, PS3, yeah!
  • Kung Fu Panda 2, yeah!
  • Fun, fun, fun, fun,
  • Lookin’ forward to the weekend!

… Ahem. I’ll be taking on Kung Fu Panda 2 for PS3. Like any astute reviewer should do, I am also going to try catch the movie release this weekend to get a more holistic opinion on the game (and hopefully will get to see it at the best cinema in KZN, Waterfall Cinemas - not joking).

If there’s more time, a little bit of System Link UNDEAD NIGHTMARE may enter the fray, Oltman (’s wife)-willing!

Go Sharks!

“The wet (and cold) weather is upon us once again so it’s time to curl up in front of the TV with a nice cuppa soup and get some serious game-time in.

DiRT 3 is done and dusted so now it’s on to White Knight Chronicles II. From what I’ve played so far I can tell it’s a polished JRPG with fantastic environments and art design, but alas - a generic storyline and cast of characters. I have yet to have my socks knocked off by a JRPG this console generation so here’s hoping something like Final Fantasy XIII-2 or Final Fantasy Versus XIII can deliver on the inherent potential of this genre.

Have a great weekend ev3rybody and catch you on the flipside as we mosey our way towards the biggest event of the year so far (naturally I’m speaking of the Uncharted 3 beta on the 28th).”

“I’m faced with a tough decision between Red Faction: Armageddon, Duke Nukem Forever and inFamous 2. I reckon the only fair way to approach this is to play each one for an hour and then it will be clear to me how I want to spend the rest of my weekend.

I have a feeling Duke is going to take the honours though…so in all fairness to the other competitors I best try Duke last.”

“It’s been a very busy work week here at El33tonline, with the team working around the clock to bring you the latest news, screenshots and trailers from E3 2011. We’ve had an awesome time letting you know about all the great games that we can look forward to in the next few months, but now it’s (almost) time to kick back, relax and enjoy some gaming time.

As I mentioned last week, it’s been a while since I could actually find some time to set aside for gaming (it’s a very busy time of the year for our industry), but that’s all going to change tonight as I get up close and personal with a few games that I’ve been keeping a close eye on. In fact it’s a day for big releases here in South Africa and around the world with inFamous 2, Red Faction: Armageddon and Duke Nukem: Forever arriving on store shelves.

Hopefully, like me, you won’t have to choose and you can enjoy some one-on-one time with Cole, Darius and the Duke himself this weekend.

Hail to the king, baby.”

“But baby it’s cold outside…

The weather is bitter, and I’m afraid to say it, but I hope it stays this way for the next few days so I can get to the very important business of playing Red Faction: Armageddon without feeling bad about wasting good weather.

I’m hoping Armageddon can keep me gripped and entertained for the duration of its singleplayer campaign, and I’m looking forward to diving into the ‘Ruin Mode’ of the game and the four-player cooperative challenges (both of which I know very little about).

A journey of discovery into the caves and underground tunnels of Mars, while facing down hordes of disturbed (and disturbing) aliens? Sounds like a weekend well spent to me!”
