Square Enix releases Imaginary Range as free app on iTunes

Imaginary Range ImageIf you’ve got a portable Apple device with iOS 3.2 or later you’re in luck. Square Enix have just launched a free app on iTunes called ‘Imaginary Range.’ The publishers claim it represents “a new genre of entertainment: a hybrid comic and game experience.”

Imaginary Range was developed by H.A.N.D. - the studio responsible for Final Fantasy: Chocobo Tales on the Nintendo DS. It includes English, French and Japanese text, and is 153 MB to download.

The app features a 53-page comic interspersed with mini-games which tie in with the preceding narrative event. Completing the mini-games earns you coins which you can use to purchase character art after you’ve reached the comic’s conclusion

Don’t be surprised if Square Enix release similar products on iTunes in the future, although not many of them are likely to carry Imaginary Range’s $0 price tag.

This is incredibly intriguing for the future - Square Enix and other publishers/developers could really capitalise on this idea to create more 'interactive' passive experiences. An excellent first step, says I.
