Nintendo has recently announced (and confirmed) that the videogame giant will officially drop the price of the Wii in the US and the UK from its current recommended retail price of $199.99 and £179.99 respectively.
This newly priced console will come bundled with Mario Kart Wii, while a line of budget-priced Wii games were also revealed.
Starting May 15th in the US, consumers will be able to purchase a black or white Wii console for $149.99, bundled with a copy of Mario Kart Wii and that game’s steering wheel peripheral. While Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort will no longer come packaged with the Wii, these titles will still be available separately.
Then on May 20th in the UK, the Wii’s price will also be dropped by £50, with a new price point of £129.
A new line of budget-priced Wii games will launch on May 15th in the US and May 20th in the UK, and will comprise titles such as Mario Super Sluggers, Wii Sports, Animal Crossing and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in the US, and Wii Sports, Warioware: Smooth Moves, Mario Strikers Charged Football and Animal Crossing in the UK – these games will be available for $20 and £19 in the US and UK respectively.
“From the day it launched,” wrote Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, “Wii has let players of all ages and experience levels have fun with one another. The new suggested retail pricing for both the hardware and select games will help create more of these magical moments for even greater numbers of people.”
This news arrives on the back of the formal confirmation that a new Nintendo home console is currently in the works at the company, and will be demonstrated and playable at this year’s E3.
