Modern Warfare 3 engine 'moves beyond' MW2, runs at 60fps

“is [Modern Warfare 3] using a brand new game engine or is anything yet to be announced?” asked Twitter user Sebastian G. of Robert Bowling, creative strategist at Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward.

Bowling’s answer makes me relieved:

“We haven’t gone into detail on the engine yet but we’ve moved beyond the [Modern Warfare 2] engine and added a lot of cool stuff for [Modern Warfare 3],” wrote Bowling in reply.

But I do wonder if this means that the engine development team at Infinity Ward has simply improved the Modern Warfare 2 technology for the sequel, or created a truly new engine? I’m betting on the former – and besides, what would a Call of Duty game be without a little id Software code in there?

Judging by the debut gameplay trailer for Modern Warfare 3, the game is looking mighty fine with whatever engine upgrades that have been made!

Bowling has also confirmed that Infinity Ward will be sticking to its “core design philosophy” and will ensure Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will run at a solid 60 frames per second for a smooth gameplay experience. From a tweet in reply to a question related to this:

“Absolutely, locked at 60 Frames Per Second. That is a core design principle for us and especially for [Modern Warfare 3].”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is already looking insane, and you can expect it to hit stores on November 8th around the world, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
