There hasn’t been an abundance of great platformers this generation, which is strange considering how well suited current console technology is to delivering a fast, responsive, surface-hopping experience.
Sonic Generations should tip the scales in the right direction when it comes to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during the latter part of this year. There are also unconfirmed rumours roaming the internet that 3DS and PC versions of the title are in the works.
If you’ve been wondering how the gameplay in Sonic Generations will operate, then the two trailers below are essential viewing. Heck, if you’ve ever enjoyed a platformer in the past then do yourself a favour and watch Sonic work his magic in the famous level “Green Hill Zone.”
The first video shows him taking on the level in “Classic” mode, while the second shows it from an entirely different viewpoint (“Modern” mode) and Sonic now has new moves at his disposal as well as a generous speed upgrade.
Although the game’s levels are based on old favourites from the Mega Drive, Dreamcast and current generation Sonic titles, the layout will be different and we can therefore expect new challenges and trials awaiting us in unexpected places.
Personally I can’t wait to revisit some old-school platforming and indulge in the game’s vibrant visuals, silky smooth frame rate and colourful locales.
