Reports started to fly around very recently regarding layoffs at SOCOM developer Zipper Interactive, and Sony has unfortunately confirmed these reports, attributing the redundancies to “normal business practice.”
The number of Zipper employees let go wasn’t revealed by the Sony spokeperson who delivered the news, but rumours doing the rounds say that no less than 33 people have been laid off.
This news arrives following the launch of Zipper Interactive’s PlayStation 3 exlusive title SOCOM 4/Special Forces last month, the release of which was tempered by the severe three-week PlayStation Network outage, meaning that no-one was able to play the studio’s latest game online (which is arguably SOCOM 4’s focus, and strongest point).
The Sony representative said that the layoffs were part of “normal business practice and a result of cutting back on production resources after the launch of two major franchises.”
