Activision Blizzard was keen to point out to investors during its recent earnings call that not only is Call of Duty: Black Ops still going strong sales-wise, but the next entry into the game industry-stomping franchise will be revealed very soon.
The latest map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, Escalation, was downloaded 1.4 million times during the first 24 hours of availability on Xbox 360, Activision said, while the PlayStation 3 version of the content will launch in the next two months.
Additionally, and during its presentation, Activision put up a slide revealing that “[s]ince Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike [map pack] launched on February 1, players have spent an average of 58 minutes per day playing online, exceeding the 55 minutes the average user spends per day on [social site] Facebook.”
And then, on top of all of this impressive data, Activision announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops is now the best-selling game of all time across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in the US and Europe (in dollars) as of this last financial quarter, while also boasting the best sales for this period in both of these territories.
So… Call of Duty is still incredibly popular, which is a good thing as the next title in the series will be fully revealed in the coming weeks, as confirmed by Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. To help promote this next Call of Duty game, Activision will spare no expense on the title’s marketing support to form the biggest awareness campaign ever delivered by the publisher.
During the call, mention was also made of a microtransaction-based version of Call of Duty (tentatively called Call of Duty: Online), developed specifically for the Chinese market, while hints were given about the next full game’s online features, as this title will feature a “best-in-class digital platform surrounding the Call of Duty franchise,” with an overarching online framework to connect console and PC players and provide further “in-game integration” features.
We look forward to hearing more about this online system and these next Call of Duty games in the near future!
