Report: Production of the PSPgo has officially been discontinued

PSPgoAccording to reports on Japanese tech sites Phileweb and AV Watch, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has confirmed recent rumours claiming that production of the company’s PSPgo portable gaming device has been discontinued, and only currently available stock of the handheld will be sold until depleted.

Once this stock is gone, the PSPgo will no longer be available on the market.

This decision by SCEJ has been made ostensibly to allow the company to “concentrate on the NGP,” Sony Computer Entertainment’s next portable device releasing at the end of this year in Japan (and possibly elsewhere) that will go on to surpass and replace both the regular PSP-3000 and the PSPgo.

The current PSP-3000 handheld will continue to be sold, while the SCEJ will “keep focusing [its] attention on it from here on out.”

The PSPgo was launched in North America and Europe in October of 2009 and in Japan in November of that year, and failed to capture as wide an audience as its predecessor, the regular PSP, believed to be a result of the PSPgo’s lack of physical media (and resultant lack of backwards compatibility with previously released UMD-based PSP titles) and its focus on internet connectivity.

Currently in Japan, the PSPgo rarely passes a few hundred units sold per week, while the PSP-3000 continues to enjoy great sales success, selling tens of thousands of units every week.
