New Tomb Raider film in production, could be a reboot

Tomb Raider Art 1 Small Following news of a new Resident Evil movie, word doing the rounds today is that a new Tomb Raider film is currently in the works after production company GK Films recently acquired the movie rights to the classic videogame franchise.

While this new movie will miss the release of the next game in the series, there is talk that the big screen adaptation of Tomb Raider will follow a similar route to Crystal Dynamics’ title which aims to act as an origin story (or ‘reboot’) of sorts.

Producers Graham King (Gangs of New York, The Departed) and Tim Headington (The Tourist, Rango) are involved in the Tomb Raider film project, while Grey Rembert will oversee production.

The first two Tomb Raider films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life in 2003 are said to have generated $432 million in revenue worldwide. This third Tomb Raider movie is due for release in 2013, with the goal of creating “daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft.”

(PS. Why not celebrate this news by taking advantage of a special price offer on Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light on Xbox LIVE Arcade?)
