There’s no business like that movie business (i.e. ‘Show Business’), and Sony Pictures recently went and announced that a fifth Resident Evil movie is currently in production, even going as far as to announced a late 2012 release date for the film, while confirming the next entry to the franchise will also be available to watch in 3D.
According to Sony Pictures, the last released Resident Evil movie in the series, Resident Evil: Afterlife, was a great success outside of the US and managed to generate $236 million at the box office alone - over two and half times the revenue of the third film, Resident Evil: Extinction. Also outside of the US, Afterlife generated roughly the same revenue as the first three movies combined.
In the US, however, Afterlife managed to accrue $60.1 million at the box office, which is up from $50.6 million generated by Extinction.
The latest upcoming film, simply titled ‘Resident Evil 5,’ is due for release on September 14th 2012.
