The holiday (a.k.a. ‘buying’) season is ramping up worldwide, and Japanese consumers collectively picked up 324 844 new consoles during the last week. Compare that figure with the previous tally of 214 487 units, and it becomes abundantly clear that the sales surge has begun.
The 3DS was the big winner this week, with 205 962 units sold during the latest accounting period - a 70% increase over last week’s sales. A major contributing factor to this incredible performance was the release of Mario Kart 7 on December 1st, which took top spot on this week’s software chart.
Many of the other consoles also benefited from the holiday rush, with the PS3 (20% increase), PSP (19% increase), Wii (54% increase) and the various models of DS all recording notably improved results.
The latest hardware chart looks like this:

Comments:
the 3DS is still selling strong, its got some good title that is tempting me to get one. will have to save up for it first. but want to see how its going to be when the PS Vita comes out.
What is it about the 3DS that makes it so popular in Japan? @POItjie the vita is going to sell huge
Its Japan, its a Nintendo console and it has some really good games on it. I rest my case.
The PS Vita I think one of the best Portable Gaming Consoles that's going to be available on the market. I can't wait to get one.
DS Lite: 21 xD
I just can't find a safe number of titles that I would actually want to buy that would influence me to get a 3DS, so I'm staying clear of it for now.
These figures are only from Japan, right?
It's got an insanely good line up in Japan:
Super Mario 3D Land Mario Kart 7 Monster Hunter Tri G Inazuma Eleven Go
All of these are million or multi-million-seller franchises, all dropping in the space of a month.
