You may not believe it, but the annual Spike Video Game Awards isn’t actually all about revealing exciting new games, nor is it centred on providing looks at upcoming titles.
No, the Spike Video Game Awards are about awards! Well, mostly anyway.
This year, respected game experts and writers acknowledged the accomplishments of a number of titles released in 2011 with awards ranging from ‘Game of the Year’ and ‘Character of the Year’ to best games on a platform and best shooter of the year.
Not surprisingly, games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2 and Bastion all walked away with recognition, but other games didn’t fair so well, most notably Battlefield 3 which didn’t receive a single award.

I see there were a few Portal 2 fanboys calling the shots there ;)
Although I may not agree with all of the winners, I'm really surprised with the 'best multiplayer' award. Sure Portal 2 had amazing, fresh multiplayer co-op ... But can it keep it's audience playing (and enjoying themselves) for possibly hundreds of hours like Gears, Battlefield and MW3?
YES!!!! Skyrim game of the year GO VGA 2011!!! I think i will have to try out Bastion, download game of the year.
OK MW3 should not have been best shooter BF3 had that title hands down, it was written all over the web, i'm sorry but that was rigged hell even IGN voted BF3 better than MW3
Bastion deserves every single award it received !! And since my Skyrim stopped working after the latest patch (my game freezes during every other load screen, I prefer incessant lagging over that (playing on PS3, who wants to swop for a XBOX copy?)) I don't think it DESERVES Game of the Year.
That's like giving a car that breaks after 10km an award for "Car of the Year" IT IS A LIE!!
@Thanticore: that's why it didn't receive PS3 Game of the Year ;) the problem seems to be isolated mainly on the PS3, but I hope it gets fixed soon, Skyrim needs you! (Well probably the other way around ;) )
Sad that BF3 is not on the list, but really Happy that Portal 2 won so many awards. the game is just awesome. Thank you for this great article.
Fanboy Hat on How Gears 3 didn't pick up any awards is insane? Arkham City was fantastic but not having Gears 3 win best Xbox game is just wrong. And portal getting best multiplayer... its not even multiplayer, more like dual player. And Bugesda winning best studio... im done!
Fanboy hat off Congrats to Bastion fully deserved as well as Blizzard for their Gaming God title.
