November NPD: Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony and Ubisoft respond

Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony - One Happy Family

The NPD Group recently released its monthly report on sales in the US videogame industry with news of Xbox 360 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 domination in November 2011 during a month where overall sales were flat, year-over-year.

As is customary, the hardware powerhouses in gaming (namely Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft) released statements of their own in order to put NPD’s sales figures into perspective, while Ubisoft also chimed in.

What did the big three have to say about their respective US market performances during November 2011? What has Ubisoft got to say for itself? Let’s find out:

Nintendo

In its response to the November NPD report, Nintendo highlighted the fact that the Wii recently crossed “major milestones” while citing the company’s “record-breaking” Black Friday sales successes this month.

Wii Console Smaller The Wii in particular reached 37.7 million units sold in the US as 860 000 consoles reached new homes, while first-year sales totals for 3DS in the region surpassed those of the Nintendo DS as 2.37 million of The Big N’s latest handheld have been sold since launch in March 2011, with 795 000 of these sold in November alone.

Nintendo notes that Super Mario 3D Land sold 625 000 units in November 2011, becoming the fastest-selling Super Mario title in US history, while The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword sold over 600 000 units in its first week on sale.

Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing Scott Moffitt said of Nintendo’s November 2011 performance:

“Great software and unparalleled value drove momentum on Black Friday and through November. Both Nintendo 3DS and Wii have already set records, and we’ve still got the bulk of the shopping season to go. People are flocking to our bundles and the fun of Mario and Zelda that can only be found on Nintendo systems.”

Microsoft

In usual fashion, Microsoft presented a neat collection of factoids to highlight its dominance in the US during the reporting month of November 2011, which include the following:

  • Holding 49 percent share of the overall current-generation console market, Xbox 360 sold 1.7 million units in November, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. This marks the ninth consecutive month Xbox 360 has had more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share, and eleventh straight month the Xbox was the top selling console in the U.S.

  • Xbox 360 unit sales grew 23 percent year over year in November.

  • Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in November (hardware, software and accessories) reached $1.4 billion, the most for any console in the U.S.

  • During the month of November, Xbox 360 held four of the top 10 console game titles including: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations” and “Battlefield 3”.

Sony

PS3 As usual, Sony Computer Entertainment America was forced to ‘positate the negative’ and Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA Patrick Seybold offered the following statement:

“PlayStation 3 is off to a phenomenal start to the holiday season, recording the best ever Black Friday sales period in the console’s five-year history.

According to the November NPD report the PS3 saw a 70% increase in hardware and a 30% increase in software year-over-year.”

Ubisoft

French videogame publishing giant Ubisoft got in on the post-NPD response game too, offering a few neatly packaged items of interest, thus:

  • For November, Ubisoft is the only publisher with two games in NPD’s top five list of best-selling games: Assassin’s Creed Revelations (No. 4) and Just Dance 3 (No. 5).

  • Sales of Assassin’s Creed Revelations are up year over year to its predecessor Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (Nov. 2010) by 10 percent.

  • Just Dance 3 continues to garner excellent sales momentum on the Nintendo Wii system. Just Dance 3 was the No. 1 Wii game for the month of November.

  • The Just Dance franchise has produced the No. 1 Wii game for the past 13 of 14 months of NPD reports (Just Dance 3 twice, Just Dance 2 ten times, Just Dance Summer Party once).

  • Dance fever continues to captivate America. As of today’s NPD report, Ubisoft has 72 percent market share among dance video games for calendar year 2011 with its recent dance game releases of ABBA You Can Dance, The Black Eyed Peas Experience, Just Dance 3 and Just Dance Kids 2.
