El33t's Question of the Day: Do you check Achievements and Trophies before playing?

El33tonline Question of the Day

For the purposes of this conversation, we will posit that there are two types of gamers: Those who care about Achievements and Trophies in games, and those who do not. (A third category, ‘Merely Curious,’ could be added, but we’ll leave these fence-sitters out for now.)

Which are you? Do vehemently track down every last collectible and objective to earn all available Achievements and Trophies in a game, or do you simply not care about these rewards? Furthermore, this Question of the Day zeroes down and asks:

Do you check Achievements and Trophies before playing?

There are entire websites dedicated to revealing all possible Achievements and Trophies in a given game to better help you discover how to best earn these awards, while both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 allow gamers to check up on the status of these rewards and get clues on how to unlock them.

Do you check these resources before and during a game? Do you care about Achievements and Trophies? Or… are you a fence-sitting ‘Merely Curious’ kind of gamer with regards to Achievements and Trophies?

Let us know, we’re ‘Very Curious’!

(If you have a Question of the Day that you would like to put to the El33tonline community, mail it to oliver[@]el33tonline.com and we’ll send it out, with credit of course!)

ok ok, I'm just going to come clean. I'm a Achievement Addict. I play the game normally and then I try and get the most achievements out of the game as much as I can. For me it just gives more value to the game and better "achievement" from playing it. I still go back to some of my old games and try and get the missing achievements. One I'm really working hard on is to get ALL the achievements in Borderlands and its 4 expansions. But I don't get sad if i can't get all of them. I normally get most of the achievements by playing like I always play. I never just rush through a game to the end just to move on to the next one. I put a lot of time into a game. Maybe that's why i'm so afraid of getting Skyrim.

Yes.

I try to avoid possible spoilers for the main story, and I do like to see if there are any missable achievements, and also if I can go back and try and get missed ones after I finish the main story.

SKWEH

It depends on my mood i guess. Sometimes i check achievements before hand other times i dont. I do try to get at least 50% of the achievements due to time constrainsts and so much awesome games being out at once

DarkMomo

Most times I first play the game, finish it and go back to get all the achievements. But with Skyrim, I am constantly checking to make sure I dont miss anything, to start over and do it all again it not an option! I do the same with assassins creed.

Lisa

Nope, I've never checked Achievements or Trophies before playing a game, but I enjoy unlocking 'em all the same!

Smuroh

Im no achievment hunter but its interesting to see what you have to do to get them so yes i do check before i play the game, but im not always trying to get them.

Graeme

I love achievements, I know it's stupid but there's a sort of Pavlovian thrill when the "achievement unlocked" pop-up appears.

I will almost always check the achievement list before starting a game, not the secret ones, I want to avoid spoilers, but to see if there's something I should work towards while playing the game. I will sometimes go back and round up some of the achievements I missed after finishing a game, as long as they're not too far out of the way. I've also visited Xbox360Achievements.org and Trueachievements.com for advice on getting some achievements, and looked up a few things on Youtube.

I'm not fanatical about it, I think I only have 2 games where I have 1000/1000 gamerscore (I've got quite a few 200/200 XBLA games, but those tend to be much easier to get), and I won't grind away for a long time at something I won't enjoy just to get one.

POItjie

I love achievements so much I actually made my BBM message tone the achievement unlocked beep. and my SMS tone is the xbox start up tone. you can tell I'm a Xbox fan?

Abduxuel

I have to be honest, the achievements in my mind do absolutely nothing for your game. Unless they add something special, I don't really care for them.

POItjie

that reminds me, I make up achievements in real life. I even have the achievement for winning something on El33tonline and one for being married for 3 years.

GaaTY

Yes. I do check the achievement list before starting. That way I know what I cannot miss. It sucks spending several days on a game, finishing it, then seeing that there is an achievement you missed. And then having to RESTART from scratch just to get it.

This I did with Darksiders. Played it 1st time through. Checked the Achievements. Missed a few. Started again. Got them all.

Or with those games that MAKE you finish it on every kind of difficulty (as achievements), if I missed achievements, I try to make sure I get it on the second playthrough.

Brattex

I'm in the same boat as @POitjie and @Graeme - I check the achievements list before hand, and will even consider playing through again to get the ones I've missed. I'm quite thorough that way.

I have two XBLA games which are 100% unlocked but the annoying thing is they're disappearing from my list once the add-ons are released (Fruit Ninja! I miss you!).

Like @POitjie, I have my SMS tone set to the "Achievement Unlocked" sound effect and sometimes when I'm doing something in real life I wish I could get an achievement for it. Normally it's something repetitive like chopping onions. I can't wait for the day that I hear a "blooweep" and a little message pops up next to me "10G - listen carefully and you can hear that onion ring" (after chopping 1,000 onions :)).

Another interesting fact - the PS3 trophies is a real put-off for me and it actually does make a difference in my psyche as to whether or not I enjoy a game more on PS3 or Xbox... odd, that.

fletbed

i check after i finished the game :) a reason to play it again ;)

Bearded_Warrior

It depends on the game. If there are potential spoilers then I try to avoid it. I usually look at them other than that though.
