Sales tracking firm The NPD Group recently released its latest report on the US videogame industry, this time for the month of October 2011, revealing an overall sales increase of just 1% across videogame hardware, software and accessory sales in the region, up to $1.08 billion compared to $1.07 billion in October 2010.
Both hardware and software sales saw revenue increases as compared to the same reporting period last year, but accessories dropped by 5%.
October 2011 Software Sales
Sales in the software category were up 3% in October 2011 compared to the same period last year, to $621.3 million.
Battlefield 3 was the clear sales victor during the month of October 2011 in the US, selling nearly two million units following launch, ahead of Batman: Arkham City which managed to sell 1.5 million copies after releasing a full week ahead of EA’s title.
NBA 2K12, RAGE and Just Dance 3 claimed third, fourth and fifth places respectively, while Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure slotted into No. 11 on the sales listing.

October 2011 Hardware Sales
Hardware sales during the month of October 2011 in the US were up by 6%, to $295.6 million, as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 once again topped the listing with nearly 400 000 consoles sold during the month. Nintendo had a lot to cheer about, too, with roughly 675 000 units of its consoles sold (across 3DS, Wii and DS platforms).
